While it may seem like the members of The Black Hollies were all born about forty years too late, the Creative Outlaws-like proclivities of their music is something desperately needed to spark today’s generation of young musicians. Be they a chic shimmy or a modish strut, the overall trippy freakbeat terrain of The Black Hollies goes on a journey through time and encompasses all the glory days and scenes of psychedelic music, be it a human-be in at Golden Gate Park circa the Summer of Love, or a walk down London’s colorful Carnaby Street in the swinging '60s. But make no mistake, The Black Hollies aren’t a mere throwback band aping the past but instead a crew of forward thinking Jersey boys that are well schooled in the roots of music stemming from a time when rock and roll was molded into kaleidoscopic proportions and fused with cleaver pop hooks.

On their second album Casting Shadows, The Black Hollies take that sonic formula and push their ever growing impetus forward into an eclectic smorgasbord of reverb-drenched euphoria with a pure pop dexterity for a soiree-filled good time of a listen. While it will no doubt appeal to listeners with a fondness for legends like Cream, Syd-era Pink Floyd, and The Yardbirds, not to mention modern day psych-rock paladins such as the Black Lips and the Warlocks, Casting Shadows won’t only be one of their career pinnacles but will serve as something akin to nouvelle vague revival on psychedelic-rock and indie pop as a whole. Some acts are content to find a style and stick with it. The Black Hollies are more interested in progress. When the band convened in 2005 to record their debut, Crimson Reflections, it was something of an experiment, mixing 60's soul and pop structures with rave-up rock results. Now, after wide acclaim and a practice regiment that has left their jaw-dropping live shows tighter than a pegged pant leg, they've reached a little further into space, introduced a wonderfully psychedelic element to their sound, and come out on the other side with Casting Shadows, a powerful rock album full of unforgettable nuggets.

Led by songwriter, vocalist and bassist Justin Angelo Morey, this crew of NY/NJ natives and lifelong friends also includes fellow Rye Coalition alums Herb Wiley V and Jon Gonnelli on dueling interstellar guitars, and the freak-beat drumming of Scott Bolasci (who has since been replaced on the live circuit by the seemingly 8-armed wonder Nick Ferrante). Together, the quartet meld classic rock touchstones with a disparate amount of influences and ideas, Wiley is featured on electric sitar for a number of tracks, and the record features the drones of an Indian noisebox called the ragini throughout. From the opening ghostly blast of "Whispers In The Forest", careening through the perfectly realized gem "Paisley Pattern Ground" and the mind twisting changes of "Bruised Tangerines" and finally settling into the soothing cool-down of "Patient Sparrow", Casting Shadows is an album in a time when folks have started to forget about the beauty of a cohesive record.

Garnering massive accolades over their East Coast adventures and unforgettable performances at both SXSW and CMJ as well as hometown freakouts alongside everyone from Ted Leo and Joan Jett, to Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las and Blue Cheer, to The Fleshtones and The Woggles, The Black Hollies continue to win over any crowd with a mix of straight skill and total sincerity. They'll be on the road throughout 2008 and you can rest assured that if you catch them once, you won't be able to shake it.

Just back from destroying crowds at this year's SXSW Marathon where the band performed for the likes of Alternative Press Magazine and Hot Topic, alongside the likes of Man Man, Chiodos, Unsane, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, An Albatross, and more, the critically acclaimed future children of our generation, Foxy Shazam, have just announced they will be performing both the East and West Coast versions of this year's Bamboozle Festival! On the west coast, the band will be performing alongside the likes Alkaline Trio, 7 Seconds, Anti-Flag, Chiodos, Jimmy Eat World, Paramore, Hot Water Music, The Dillinger Escape Plan and The Bouncing Souls. From Ray Charles to Axl Rose, Little Richard to Jerry Lee Lewis, the piano and pianist have been driving forces fueling some of the most monstrous musical movements ever put to audience's ears. Enter, Foxy Shazam.

Taking their queue from contemporaries like At the Drive-In, Gogol Bordello, Man Man, and others in the modern piano-driven punk era, FOXY SHAZAM construct a formula of chaotic and disjointed, convulsive punk rock, complete w/ apocalyptic lyrics and doom-ridden instrumentation, seemingly rising and intoxicating like vapors from a cryptic, acid-laden party in hell. Imagine the soundtrack to a bad trip featuring demon-gnomes encircling and bouncing about, eyes bulging like that creature on the plane in Stephen King's Twilight Zone. Freaky shit!

The self-proclaimed “Evel Knievel of Rock N Roll,” Foxy Shazam is here to make a musical death defying stunt with their New Weathermen debut Introducing, to be released in January of 2008. The album, recorded with producer Casey Bates (Chiodos, Heavy Heavy Low Low) takes their piano propelled songs that layer spastic hardcore noise atop fractured Soul inspired pop to a new level, one that emphasizes - well - good times, tells vocalist Eric Nally. “The whole point of the album is to be a feel-good dance party. We stepped up our game while throwing our whole selves and personality quirks in it, making the album very centered and focused on our development.” The songs are varied, and there are a few head scratchers thrown in the mix, tells Nally. “One song, Dangerous Man, is meant for the soundtrack of a Robin Hood film. Another song, Red Cape Diver, is about a bull fighter who is telling his family that he loves them before he goes off to work. But most of the songs are just about having a good time.” The first single off of their record, and one of the biggest party-starters, Yes Yes Yes! is making its debut on Myspace this month.

Foxy Shazam has been taking their party mobile since their formation in 2004. The quintet from Cincinnati, OH, which consists of Nally, Loren Turner (guitar), Daisy (bass), Sky White (piano), and Joe Halberstadt (drums) are currently out on tour with Heavy Heavy Low Low and Tera Melos, and have booked their own tours in the past with Tub Ring, Look What I Did, and others. Speaking on their direction, Turner admits “we decided early on not to hold back on any kind of sound as long as it sounds good, we will use it.” The result is a divergent sound that doesn’t fit comfortably in any one genre but reaches across many. “We’ve always gone over well with our live shows whether playing to a bar full of old guys or a VFW hall full of hardcore kids we also draw a positive reaction.” Through this intense live show experience, the band has drawn a fanbase in many national markets. While their shows tend to get a little wild, for example the band playing to reckless abandon including White playing the piano with a severed deer hoof and Nally putting out a lit cigarette on his cheek, the emphasis is on the visible, soulful nature of the music. “We tend to be really theatrical because we are so passionate about the music. It really moves us, and we don’t need props to show it.”

The band released their debut album The Flamingo Trigger (2005), and then went on to tour exhaustively, performing over two hundred shows within a span of eighteen months. The word of mouth about the band began to spread catching the attention of many, including The Number Twelve Looks Like You's front man and band manager, Jesse Korman. Foxy Shazam was then quickly introduced by Jesse to Nick Storch of New Weathermen Records. Storch recalls "He (Korman) told me I had to check them out and at first I had no idea what was going on in their music and put it aside. A few weeks later I put their demos back in with a fresh mind and it clicked right away, these guys are chaotic but there's also a real pop sensibility that doesn't usually occur with bands this far out." Foxy Shazam is the second artist to be signed to the label in partnership with Ferret Music.

Blake/e/e/e's line-up includes members of Franklin Delano, and you can sure hear it. Their debut full length, Border Radio, is nothing but explosive. Dressed in a folky salsa, the album continues changing direction from beginning to end.

From the weird dub intro - to a condensed reprise from the two tracks that follow - to house folk celestial drones, from Sixties candies and psychedelic space ballads, to post-punk creepy anthems, from world ethnic spirituals to alt. country filled with drones and bones, and then: Beach Boys go to church and the church becomes a mutant disco, astral instrumentals and howlings to the shooting star. Border Radio is what happens when your dreams have become too beautiful for your head and transform into something tangible. It captures the urgency to make sense out of the pet sounds our individual microcosms create. Chicago's Blake/e/e/e appear to have their own Theogony: a new and brave world, waiting to be explored, a self-produced kaleidoscope of new musical ideas that make Border Radio at the same time very tasteful and weirdly experimental.

An interview with Josh Graham (Neurosis, A Storm of Light)



Josh Graham is multitasking, and not in a chew gum and walk kind of way either. Graham first burst on the scene as the newest member of Bay Area titans Neurosis, handling the visual element which included live pieces and graphic design, eventually leading into the legendary "A Sun That Never Sets" companion DVD. On the heels of that well received DVD, Josh went on to direct music videos and design artwork for Dillinger Escape Plan, Enon, Jesu, Khann, Underoath, Saves The Day, and many others.

Meanwhile, Josh wielded a heavy (like the music) axe (like the guitar) in Red Sparowes featuring members of the like-minded Isis, Battle Of Mice with members of local metallers Made Out Of Babies, and Tribes of Neurot (a Neurosis related experimental project). His tenure with Red Sparowes has recently come to an end, but that hasn't stopped Mr. No-Sleep from starting another band... A Storm Of Light. A Storm Of Light recently opened up night two of the Neurosis/Mastodon extravaganza (their second show ever, check out videos from it here and here) and a Seattle date with Neurosis and Converge. Up next, the boys are scheduled to tear down the Pussycat Lounge in NYC this Saturday, March 29th with Hull in a show that will also feature the art of Jorden Haley.

BrooklynVegan's Black Bubblegum sat down with Josh to hash out his thoughts on democracy (in songwriting), how to keep it simple, and how much it means to him to be "Riding Dirty".
