CMJ Reviews The Black Hollies' "Casting Shadows!"

huge thanks to Eric Davidson and the entire CMJ staff!

BLACK HOLLIES: Casting Shadows
By Eric Davidson

On their second CD, this New Jersey-based band continues to ardently ignore any assumptions that new musical invention is central to making guitar rock. Sure, it helps if you think you're adding to the genre heap with some tweaks. But if that just means throwing a synthesizer onto Pavement, Pixies or Talking Heads rewrites, as seems often the case these days, then maybe sometimes it's best to just stick with an expert enunciation of a sound—for the Black Hollies, it's paisley-shirt psych-rock circa-1968. Hey, there's a slot for everyone on the indie rock shelf. And actually, compared to their often bar band-like live show, the Black Hollies have taken some major steps forward on Casting Shadows. They drift farther afield from the basic garage rock stomp, and increasingly crib from the psych-end of the Nuggets box set with a swirlier mood and production than their 2006 debut. Requisite wah-wah and fuzz pedals, reverb harmony vocals and talk of tangerines and sprightly, mysterious girls fit as comfortably as a smart purple corduroy jacket worn at a summer bonfire, where, incidentally, this disc would work just fine.

Tracklist For Casting Shadows:
01. Whispers Beneath The Willows
02. Paisley Pattern Ground
03. Under A Winter's Spell
04. The Autumn Chateau
05. Hamilton Park Ballerina
06. Bruised Tangerines
07. That Little Girl
08. If You Won't Let Go
09. Running Through My Mind
10. Patient Sparrow

Matt & Kim Announce SXSW Appearances and Trip to Alaska!

MATT AND KIM
Announce SXSW Appearances * Alaskan Adventure!

Matt and Kim's live show is where the magic really happens - The Village Voice

Recently home from their trek of the Australian outback, Brooklyn's hottest dance-punk duo, Matt & Kim, have announced just some of the exciting news they have in store for us in 2008.

Starting things off will be a short trip to Austin's SXSW Music Conference, where they will perform to packed houses on some of the hippest bills in town (ie Mess With Texas, IHEARTCOMIX, the Vice Party, the Todd P Party, and more), see dates and details below.

Following the industry madness, the two will make a not-so-common stop in, wait for it, ALASKA! That's right, the beautiful state that neighbors the North Pole will be visited by one of our generations most up and coming talents, for what is sure to melt the glaciers and have the grizzlies dancing in their caves.

And this is just some of the fun Matt & Kim want to tell you about, but be patient, as we'll have to wait and watch eagerly as they spend their downtime recording their next full-length album due out later this year.

CMJ Reviews Shellshag w/ The Slits @ The Mercury Lounge in New York!

huge thanks to Jason Glastetter and the entire CMJ staff!

Shellshag | Mercury Lounge | March 5, 2008
click to be taken to the full review!

Kicking off their tour opening for The Slits last night, Shellshag proved that punk rock is still kicking and screaming. The Brooklyn duo’s take on punk is, to put it mildly, quite a spectacle.
