Pitchfork Reviews Son Lux's "At War w/ Walls and Mazes!"

huge thanks to Evan McGarvey and the entire Pitchfork staff!

Son Lux
"At War With Walls & Mazes"
(Anticon)

Son Lux's debut, At War With Walls & Mazes, resembles the classical concerto. Electronic composer and Son Lux leader Ryan Lott is the soloist, with gentle, sparse vocals, against a backdrop of classical instruments. Occasionally a single organic sound rises behind Lott's utterances, like the bass guitar peeling away from the timberline drum creaks and overlapping whispers on "Raise". These are rarities; for the lion's share of the album's 45 minutes the mood is severe. Son Lux perches over a digital wilderness-- a wilderness of recreated crowd noise, cracked samples, and mutated loops. Laid out as a narrative (beginning with "Prologue" and tidying up with "Epilogue"), with sharp, direct titles ("Wither", "Stand", "War"), Walls & Mazes has a coarseness, a fatalism, between Lott and the landscapes he creates. It's a heaviness of heart relieved only when those interceding instruments (cello on "Stay", the supple, measured piano on "Break") twine with the vocals against the molded chaos.

But there are lights in the darkness and a holy ghost in the Son Lux machine. At War With Walls & Mazes is an album infused with a religiosity that's at times humble and unnamed and at times romantic. "Where have all the holy gone?/ Is there no one to condemn you?/ Where have all the wicked gone?/ Is there no one left to beat you down?", he asks on "Break". The imagery is clear, the sentiment classic, and the delivery hushed and awed. It's the sonic background that's so affecting. That twist in the combination produces odd troikas of comparison: the lyrical concerns of Sufjan Stevens circa Seven Swans, production techniques from Massive Attack, and the classical habits of Nico Muhly.

And even when Lott is playing for us here on Earth, the album's concerns are stained. "Will you love me/ Like he loves me?" Son Lux mews on the clinging, almost uncomfortably sensuous "Stay". That "He" should probably be capitalized. Later, on "Betray": "You will betray me baby/ And I will be true." (Sucks to be "You"). Lott is a performance artist at heart-- he's had his multimedia projects featured in the Guggenheim and produces as much music for choreography as he does for just listeners. As an album, Walls & Mazes may have moments of gauzy, near-inert tinkering-- "Stand" and "Tell"-- and it's no doubt an emotionally draining listen, but as a project, as an aesthetic, there's a resonant, engaging conflict. A good friend of mine once said there were only three proper subjects for rock songs: God, Girls, and Growing Up. Ryan Lott proves with Walls & Mazes that he's got the first one down. How orthodox will the next ones sound?

Silje Nes Announces US Tour w/ The Dodos!

Silje Nes
Announces US Tourdates w/ The Dodos in Support of Her Debut Album "Ames Room," out March 11th on Fat Cat Records!

"Ames Room sounds like we're hearing it under a magnifying glass. Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Silje Nes amplifies sounds that are typically miniature, so the song pops and clicks like hooves on cobblestone, as if the title space is located either in a dollhouse or perhaps Nes' imagination." - Pitchforkmedia.com

"Norway's Silje Nes has crafted a wondrous and whimsical album in the form of Ames Room. Songs that are equal parts playful, simple and heartfelt all swirl around in a mixture homespun keys and spare bedroom beats. Her voice whispers from under the covers with lyrics written in the frost that forms on the windows. Nes works in lightly wound loops that burst with an intimate charm that is in no way uncommon to her home region. Claptrap ambience and an acute yet charmingly simple sense of merging the natural with the electronic make Nes' compositions instantly endearing and yet subtly catchy." - Raven Sings The Blues

Welcome to the sweet and mischievous sound-world of Silje Nes!

FatCat first became aware of Norwegian singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist through a unique and utterly charming 2005 demo. Immediately intrigued by the quirkily sprawling mixture of instruments, electronics and sweet vocals, the label remained in touch with Silje, as she slowly and gradually pieced together what would become her debut album, Ames Room. Boldly inventive and broad-visioned, Ames Room announces the emergence of a hugely talented and distinctive young artist. Excepting the first track, which was written and recorded with Kristian Stockhaus from Ungdomskulen, the album is solely Silje’s work, and is imbued throughout with her distinct joy in the act of creation.

The home-recorded album gathers together material created between fall 2004 and summer 2007. For Silje, recording is just as important as songwriting, and all the tracks were recorded spontaneously, as they were written, leaving in rough edges and imperfections. While her early recordings were largely instrumental (often using her voice as an instrument, without lyrics) and more heavily electronic, over the past year lyrics and vocals have come to the fore along with guitar and drums. Silje’s voice is enchanting: breathy and beautifully measured, calmly sitting at the center of the musical webs she spins like a benevolent animating spirit.

While Silje creates a sound-world entirely her own, Ames Room shares an autodidactic adventurousness with peers like Tujiko Noriko, Islaja, Lau Nau, or Foehn, as well as the homespun, sprawling beauty of The Pastels, Pram, or Crescent. Broad-ranging and full of character, Ames Room moves from languid dream-pop to stomping, upbeat tracks, to more introspective. abstract numbers. Sparkling melodies exude a music-box sweetness, while spindly electronics - barbed, bubbling, and tinkling - weave around an eclectic instrumentation that includes cello, drums, guitar, bass, keyboards, recorder, glockenspiel, xylophone, melodica, and trumpet, as well as percussion played on all manner of found objects.

Silje Nes grew up in the tiny town of Leikanger, in Sognefjord, the largest fjord in Norway, before moving to the rainy, larger town of Bergen in 2000. She began making her own music in 2001, recording on 4-track demo software through a tiny inbuilt microphone on a laptop. Though she’d previously studied classical piano, when she started recording she decided to do so with guitars and instruments on which she had no playing experience. Guided by finding sounds she loved and the excitement of discovering new instruments without learned conventions, she made use of whatever equipment she could get hold of - an old synth, a cello, a drum kit, a laptop, loop pedals, etc. – to create the unique instrumentation and songwriting style evident on Ames Room.

THE WORLD/INFERNO
FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY

Kickoff West Coast Tour To SXSW!

“A combination of Bruce Springsteen, The Pogues and the noise the devil makes as cities burn. It's one thing to talk about the destruction of institutions that hold society together, but another to mean it. World/Inferno Friendship Society means it, or seems to, and it's unclear which is more dangerous.” - NPR

"A raucous, nine-person cabaret act that introduced a welcome touch of anarchy to the cozy Caucus Patio" - Entertainment Weekly

"Showtune-esque vocals, plenty of horns, and hooks that are impossible *not* to sing along to." - Alternative Press

“If you're looking for something different, important and fun (all at the same time), then I can think of no CD that fits the bill as well as Red-Eyed Soul.” – Punknews.org

"The word "unique" doesn't even describe half of the qualities that make the WORLD INFERNO / FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY a compelling recorded and live act. This compact of friends and roaring musicians is "disorderly conduct" in motion, enacted with a fervor that cannot be washed out." - Pastepunk.com

"Addicted to Bad Ideas" is the new album from the collective known as The World/Inferno Friendship Society, Gotham City's anarchist big-band originally known for bringing their brand of circus inspired swing-punk to rooftops, basements, halls, churches and anywhere their fire-breathing mayhem was accepted. The Inferno has since created a cult-following (especially in the New York City metropolitan area) that is so magical, their live appearances are some of the most intense and eagerly anticipated events of the weekend.

Recorded by Don Fury and featuring, for the first time ever, a full orchestra backing the group, "Addicted to Bad Ideas" is by far the band's most fascinating work yet. Premiering live in Fall 2007 @ WXPN's World Cafe in Philadelphia, in conjunction with the Chunksaah Records release of the band's new record, and followed by a nation-wide tour w/ Against Me!, one of America’s finest progressive punk bands bring their unique vision to the stage, and delves into the most comprehensive and intriguing work the World/Inferno Friendship Society has ever brought us.

MORE ON WORLD/INFERNO:

The World/Inferno Friendship Society is not a rock band with a horn section; it's a fully-integrated orchestra of young men and women writing for you songs of the wine, freedoms and foibles which make life more than waking up and going to work every day. Nine pieces - 2 drummers 4 horns 2 guitars way too many teeth a piano and an accordion. Sign the fuck up!

Fate, my friends, loves the Fearless. And We, in turn, love You. Don't turn away from love, friends--don't be chicken. THE WORLD/INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY is all the proof you need. With songs so sweet and a quicksilver beat, a lean 9-piece orchestra of girls and boys plays the cabaret-soul-punkety soundtrack to your romances and disasters. The vaudeville circus you always wished your life could be can be--just come and see!

Pitchfork Leaks New Russian Circles Song To The World!

huge thanks to Mark Richardson, Marc Hogan, and the entire Pitchfork staff!

New Music: Russian Circles: "Harper Lewis" [Stream]

Are circles really different in Russia? Or did that end with the fall of communism? Chicago's Russian Circles aren't telling, comrades. They're instrumental like that. "Harper Lewis" is from the band's Suicide Squeeze debut Station (the follow-up to 2006's Flameshovel-issued Enter), and it's cold and vast like a certain Eurasian nation-- or just their local Lake Michigan for a few months around this time each year. Drummer Dave Turncrantz sets a militant tribal groove, while newly recruited bassist Brian Cook (of These Arms Are Snakes) drops anchor with a forbidding, slightly overdriven drone. That lets guitarist Mike Sullivan plot out slow post-rock builds, clicky headphone-panning arpeggios, and thrashing metal chugs overhead. If you sketched that all on a graph, the shape might be a circle, whatever country you're coming from-- or it might look like one of those plot structure charts from English class, spread out over seven minutes. If that's considered a circle in Russia, no wonder they lost the Cold War to the 1980s version of Fred Thompson.
