Oxbow Announces Tour-Only EP * Eugene Robinson Pens Debut Novel!

SONGS FOR THE FRENCH
A limited edition tour-only 12" release of the highest order

What you will read and how you will read it - these words off of an actual physical artifact - will be an experience shared by increasingly fewer of you given the quickly shifting relationship between art and commerce; but we are entrusting you with this dictum: explain it to the rest. That: this SONGS FOR THE FRENCH is a highly conscious effort to do things exactly as we ourselves would never do them in order to create a compelling bridgework between THE NARCOTIC STORY of yesterday and THE THIN BLACK DUKE of tomorrow. Lyrically, musically, thematically this march into intuitive mind has been Russian rouletted into existence, with OXBOW ceding control where control has never been ceded. [Song order? Chosen by Golden Mastering. Intervals? Also Golden Mastering. Some lyrics penned in an in-studio state of fugue.] All randomized and all pointing purposefully toward everywhere. Or specifically: an untoward level of clarity. Of this we are clear. Yes, of this we are clear: the ship is sailing further from land. And truer words have never been spoken.

Buy "A Long Slow Screw" here!

The first novel from OXBOW's EUGENE S. ROBINSON, and the second publication after the release of his 2007 book FIGHT: EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT ASS KICKING BUT WERE AFRAID YOU'D GET YOUR ASS KICKED FOR ASKING [Harper Collins], A LONG SLOW SCREW is a two-fisted hardboiled crime saga set in 1970s New York that closely follows a diamond heist gone right and then murderously wrong. Featuring a passel of punks, tough broads, shysters and homicidal homos, A LONG SLOW SCREW draws heavily on Robinson's real life involvement with elements partially detailed in his best-selling FIGHT, weaving a fictional story of the chaotic pre-9/11 world of New York City. A native New Yorker himself, Robinson's novel reads like a travelogue to the business end of a bunch of very, very bad things.

And following OXBOW's 2009 band tour, as well as A LONG SLOW SCREW's release on the tail of the successful 2008-2009 U.S./European tour for FIGHT, Robinson, Mammoth Booking, Conspiracy and Tone Deaf Booking are offering A LONG SLOW SCREW spoken word European / UK tour for 2010. An evening of song, sex and short readings, Robinson's A LONG SLOW SCREW tour will cover America's twin obsession with fucking and killing both up close AND personally.

Jello Biafra on The Cover of Rock-A-Rolla Magazine!

The first full album of music in over four years from the ex-Dead Kennedys legend, this months sees the release of The Audacity Of Hype, the debut from Jello Biafra’s brand new outfit The Guantanamo School Of Medicine. “I saw The Stooges on Iggy Pop’s 60th birthday and got caught up in the moment like everybody else in the room” Jello tells us, “and it occurred to me – oh shit, I turn 50 next year, I better do something that, if it’s half as good as The Stooges, I’ll...

MetalSucks Talks To James Plotkin of Jodis / Khanate

Interview: James Plotkin of Jodis / Khanate

The thin grey thread that runs through all of Plotkin’s projects? Restless experimentation, a trait that’s found him dissolving and expanding the boundaries of extreme music for two decades. Experimentation is at the heart of Plotkin’s newest group Jodis, an open-ended collaboration with vocalist Aaron Turner (Isis/Old Man Gloom) and drummer Tim Wyskida (Khanate/Khlyst). Plotkin recently sat down with MetalSucks to talk about Jodis’s new Hydra Head release Secret House. As you’ll read, his reflections on his own creative process are just as wide-ranging and thoughtful as his discography.

Paste Magazine Covers the Ernest Jenning Label Showcase @ CMJ!

CMJ 2009: Wild Yaks, Still Flyin', The Black Hollies, Title Tracks - by Reed Fischer

* Wild Yaks

The Ernest Jenning label showcase at the Knitting Factory’s new Brooklyn location was ambitious, serving up eight bands ranging from Title Tracks’ throwback Costello-fused pop to the Black Hollies’ throw-waaay-back Brit-rock to Still Flyin, a party band with so many members onstage that no amateur photographer had any hope of capturing the whole of the brass section.

Billboard Covers Clutch Live in New York!

Clutch / October 9, 2009 / New York (The Fillmore at Irving Plaza)

Maryland hard rock band Clutch is coming up on their 20th year, maintaining a consistent following with constant touring, unique wit, and fearless tendency to mix metal with genres like blues and funk. Much of the band's direction and personality is thanks to Neil Fallon, Clutch's singer, co-songwriter and lyricist who is known for weaving historical, literary and downright nerdtastic references into his hard-banging songs--as he told the Austin American-Statesman in August, "I'm reading all of the Hugo and Nebula [science fiction award] winners in sequential order."

The Village Voice Spotlights Dark Meat @ CMJ!

Dark Meat+Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt (CMJ)
Sat. October 24th, 8pm
BY CHRISTOPHER WEINGARTEN

Dark Meat are a hippie-punks in the classic, musty vein of Butthole Surfers or Meat Puppets — the only difference being that there's, like, two dozen of them touring in a big green school bus. Their upcoming second album, Truce Opium, has a better mastery of what to do with their massive horn section, focusing more on ecstatic textures than wild freakouts, though their show will probably still have its share of wild, 20-person sound pileups.

Decibel Magazine Talks To Jello Biafra (Parts 1 and 2!)

Interview: Jello Biafra

His new album The Audacity of Hype by Jello Biafra and The Guantanamo School of Medicine is the kind of bristling, cantankerous hardcore punk rock you'd expect from the Dead Kennedys founder after enduring 8 years of Dick and Bush. In this half of the interview, Jello talks about the Dead Kennedys legacy, playing a show during the Seattle protest of 1999 with Krist Novoselic and Kim Thayil, Shepard Fairey's cover art for The Audacity of Hype, what it's like to be a creative criminal, and why he'd rather you created something of your own rather than beg him to tattoo your nutsack.

RCRD LBL Premiere: Get Back Guinozzi! "Where Are You"

DOWNLOAD: Get Back Guinozzi - Where Are You

Let this song from London-via-France duo Get Back Guinozzi be a lesson to budding popsmiths the world over–less is more, guys; less is more. For the majority of these maddeningly ingratiating three minutes, there's nothing but Fred Landini's guitar and Eglantine Gouzy's coy, I'm-singing-in-a-dollhouse voice. It's like twee Billy Bragg, or something. It's also the lead song from Carpet Madness, their debut album for Fat Cat, which drops on October 20th.

The Aquarian Reviews Star Fucking Hipsters' "Never Rest In Peace"

Star Fucking Hipsters
Never Rest In Peace
(Alternatives Tentacles)

Their new album, Never Rest In Peace, jumps from fast-paced dirty punk songs to skank-worthy tunes, to bouncy pop-punk, while still sticking to their strong political lyrics. It begins with a speedy intro of thrash beats and transitions into “3,000 Miles Away,” which is a catchy song against brutality. “Star Fucking Hipsters Theme” will easily become a sing-along anthem at live shows with its chanting vocals and militant drumming. Though this album is short, I think it’s a perfect length for their energetic speedy tunes.

Stereogum Premieres New Think About Life!

New Think About Life - "Johanna"

It's been three years since Montreal's Think About Life debuted with the self-titled dance record and hyper-energetic live show that made them one worth watching from the seemingly bottomless scene of Montreal circa 2006. In the interim keyboardist Graham Van Pelt earned a Polaris nomination for his more-than-a-side-project Miracle Fortress's twist on Brian Wilson with Five Roses, and scene-profile writers have set up outposts in too many cities to count. TAL are finally back with Family, a ten-song set that expands on their first effort's fuzzy-synth kinetecism with a new array of tricks in service of the same principles: high-energy, highly right-brained dance music.

Today We Remember: Dickie Peterson of Blue Cheer

Today, one of the most legendary musicians in American rock history is no longer with us. Known to those who knew him as a great human being, Blue Cheer bassist, lead singer, and founding member, Dickie Peterson, passed away at his home in Germany at the age of 63 years old. He will be missed.

From BlueCheer.us:

Los Angeles, CA – Friends, fans and heavy metal rock and rollers around the world are mourning the death of Blue Cheer bassist and lead singer Richard Allan “Dickie” Peterson (b. September 12, 1946), after a long fight against cancer. Peterson, age 63, died in Erkelenz, Germany, where he lived, on the morning of October 12, 2009. He is survived by wife Ilka Peterson, ex-wife Marilyn (Peterson) Stephens with whom he had a daughter, Corrina Peterson-Kaltenrieder, and a grandson. He was a founding member and leader of the San Francisco band Blue Cheer; a band known to heavy metal fans for being louder and heavier than any band before them and for laying the blueprint for much of what would come after. The band debuted with a ground shaking cover of Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues” on their 1968 album Vincebus Eruptum. In the early days, the Cheer regularly played shows with their San Francisco peers including such era luminaries as The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Big Brother & the Holding company and Cream.

The band’s last US tour (members Peterson, founding drummer Paul Whaley, and guitarist Andrew “Duck” MacDonald) was in support of their 2007 release What Doesn’t Kill You… and had the band playing shows with the fourth generation of bands to follow in their path. “He loved the younger musicians,” said MacDonald of his bandmate, “he thought of all of them as his children.” Zach Gabbard of the band Buffalo Killers, one of Dickie’s favorite new generation rock bands, said “You never know what it is going to be like to play with your heroes, but we walked into the club and Dickie stopped and said, ‘Buffalo Killers, cool name.’ We played and hung out with Dickie and the rest of the band all night. It was a gift. Dickie was worthy of his hero status and will be missed by many.”

Plans were underway for the band to tour in support of the 2009 Rainman Records DVD release of Blue Cheer Rocks Europe when Dickie’s cancer was found. Tour plans were put on hold, but the first full length concert DVD in the band’s more than forty year history was released without delay. The DVD includes not only the concert footage with 5.1 audio, but also included a Peterson voiceover commentary and a complete interview with the late leader of the band.

Dickie and Blue Cheer cherished their fans, the 1%ers as they were called, and considered them the fourth member of their band. “Without you, what we do is completely pointless” Peterson said to an audience in 2006, continuing “you’ve got to take care of each other, you’re all you’ve got.” MacDonald says that Dickie believed in the best of people “the people loved him and he loved them right back. It was the best relationship he had in his life.”

These Arms Are Snakes in The LA Weekly!

Rock Picks: Steve Earle, Polvo, These Arms Are Snakes, Correatown

MONDAY, OCTOBER 12
These Arms Are Snakes @ The Smell

Seattle-by-way-of-Minnesota quartet These Arms Are Snakes has earned its slightly menacing and equally meandering name by making proggy post-hardcore for the better part of five years and three albums. The group’s artfully aggressive songs — which sport titles like “Prince Squid” and, on occasion, a lyric along the lines of “I want to be able to stick my fist in your mouth/And feel all 32” — have gotten tighter with time (as a serpentine embrace probably would), making them a sort of Bixler-Zavala/Rodriguez-Lopez combo in reverse. At the Drive-In, in fact, frequently comes to mind whilst one is listening to TAAS’ most recent full-length, 2008’s Tail Swallower and Dove (Suicide Squeeze), and this is a good thing — these guys are veterans with an impressive ear for detail and mastery of the form.

Punknews Interviews Cave In Frontman Steve Brodsky!

Interviews: Steve Brodsky (Cave In)

When Cave In declared their hiatus three and a half years ago, no one knew what to expect for the quartet’s future. Everyone knows that a hiatus is more often than not a prelude to the breakup. Not so, however, for Cave In, who has just released the dynamic, raging Planets of Old on Hydra Head. Listening to it, it’s hard to believe that the band was apart for so long. The songs are as tight as ever, and the lyrics spin dark, haunting tales against the heavy, ethereal sound scape of the EP.

Steve Brodsky talked with Talia Miller about the new album, his recent interest in writing, and what it’s like to play together again after being apart.

Star Fucking Hipsters Announce New Album * West Coast Dates w/ Citizen Fish!

Announce New Album, "Never Rest In Peace," Out October 20th on Alternative Tentacles * West Coast Tour w/ Citizen Fish and More!

There's an enormous gulf that separates the world of punk rock from the world of punk rock we care about, and nobody seems quite as comfortable making that distinction as Star Fucking Hipsters. - Aversion.com

“Never Rest In Peace” is the stellar second album and Alternative Tentacles debut by the smoking-hot punk supergroup featuring Sturg “Stza” Crack, and Nico de Gallo, as well as members of Hold Steady, Ensign, Big Attack!, Awkward Thought, and Aloke.

STAR FUCKING HIPSTERS returns this time for a much fiercer round of sonic glory, combining insanely catchy melodic punk and metal, with the token ska tune. The band has clearly grown since their first album, 2008’s Fat Wreck Chords release "Until We're Dead.” A year’s worth of star fucking live shows, writing, and off-the-map creativity from central STAR FUCKING HIPSTER, Sturg, pays off with rock-solid songwriting and a sharper edge. Songs with an aggressive political slant take on topics like Native American issues (“Banned From the Land”), and a woman’s right to choose (“Church & Rape”). “Never Rest In Peace” is Sturg’s most heartfelt and emotional album to date.

Recorded almost entirely in the band members’ bedrooms at the world famous C-Squat on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the thirteen songs on "Never Rest In Peace" leap out of the stereo and club your not-so-friendly neighborhood cop with blunt songs of rebellion and revolution. Recorded by up and coming production wizard Ryan D. Jones and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Beastie Boys, Metallica, Ramones, Rancid, Nirvana, Slayer), this is the best sounding record Stza's done since Choking Victim's classic "No Gods/No Managers."

The record includes cameos from Dick Lucas (Subhumans U.K., Citizen Fish, Culture Shock), Jasper Pattison (Citizen Fish, Culture Shock), and Bryan Kienlen (Bouncing Souls). It includes art by famed DIY artists Fly (“PEOPs,” Dog Dayz) and Paul Barron. SFH have toured the U.S. and U.K., and are planning a West Coast Tour this November with Citizen Fish (dubbed "Cracktoberfest") including a performance at the Alternative Tentacles 30th Anniversary Festival.
