LEWIS & CLARKE Tours w/ Bat For Lashes!

LEWIS & CLARKE
Announces US Tour w/ Bat For Lashes!

"The eight tracks here are protracted and whisper-quiet yet engaging, with a constant tug of sorrow that satisfies..Rogai exhales poignant lyrics and juggles elegant instrumentation with a revolving cast that includes members of Man Man and Rachel's..Fans of Iron & Wine and ilk would be wise to prick up their ears." - Harp Magazine

"Eight tracks of delicate beauty" - Pitchforkmedia.com

"The melodies are exquisite, as delivered by an impressive array of strings, percussion, and Rogai’s own direct, unforced vocals...This is a band that more than deserves its growing acclaim." - Pop Matters

"Rogai has a gift for speaking plainly while tonguing poetry, and his meditations on life cycles and pastoral philosophy blossom and collapse with organic grace...Contributions from Man Man, Rachel's and Hella might draw people in to Holy Birth, but Rogai's cloudless crystalline vision will keep them." - A.V. Club (The Onion)

Read Dusted Magazine and Stereogum features!

The songs of Lewis & Clarke are medicinal, meditative, and trance-inducing. They wind along lengthy lines of chamber folk, full of bows and bells, aphorisms and dreamy dreams. Both literally and figuratively, Blasts of Holy Birth is about being born and re-born.

Eve Miller and Russell Higbee join the folds of nylon-string guitar, harp, keyboard, horns, strings, and drums, with Lou Rogai, the voice and vision, with arms of friends draped in the name Lewis & Clarke.

Rogai is a pastoralist, a rat-race expatriate, an old-soul musician who chose to live more deliberately with his family under the eaves of mountain trees in Pennsylvania's Delaware Water Gap. It is a community distant to the big city's pace, but close enough for gigs and recording sessions with his city-folk colleagues. Among them are Russell Higbee (harp, keys) of Man Man and Eve Miller of Rachel's (cello) who, too, embrace the exploration of sinewy eastern melody and unaffected compassion called Lewis & Clarke.

"A profound work of earthy, orchestrated new-folk, Blasts Of Holy Birth raises the bar for both listeners and players in search of evolution in roots-oriented music. Meshing gorgeously hushed melodies and plucked guitars with baroque string arrangements and ethereal pulses and surges, Lewis & Clarke ( a.k.a. Del. Water Gap's Lou Rogai) has crafted a transcendent work of epic proportions. Themed around the birthing experience, the album moves in tidal breaths through meditative and hazy soundscapes, delicate minimalism, and goose bump inducing chamber sections. An expose of grace, beauty, peril, triumph, and the interconnectivity of all things - musically and lyrically, it's really that good." -
Impose Magazine

In Delaware Water Gap, one can tune in to vibrations that only exist in certain areas. It is here that Rogai, with his family, took to nest in an antiquated dwelling within earshot of an historic jazz landmark: tuned in, turned on, and just far enough away from the rattle of the rest of the world.

Blasts of Holy Birth was written not with the usual pen-in-hand love-lost scribbles that song scribes commonly sing; here are celebrations, hand-in-hand, of life's travails and joys!

Lewis & Clarke songs are long and unhurried life lessons, believed and still unveiling truths, to himself and his son, who was months away from LIFE: Day One while this album was being composed. The only piece here not written by Rogai, "Comfort Inn", is by his friend, Aaron Ross, the CA mountain dweller and singer of Hella. Ross was awaiting the birth of his daughter during same time that Rogai expected his son, and so it only fit that they share in each other's song.

Over the last few years, Lewis & Clarke have toured and performed with Isobel Campbell (Belle & Sebastian), Blur, Robyn Hitchcock, Joan of Arc, Okkervil River, Mi & L'au, The Black Swans and other contemporaries.

And as is the case with good artists and smart adults, it is through big change and artistic redemption that we re-learn who we really are. And as the meat of life is inseparable from the weight of song, Lewis & Clarke's heavy-duty beauty, Blasts of Holy Birth, is born.

More praise:

"Lewis & Clarke has carved out its own niche thanks to the lush arrangements of its debut, 2005's "Bare Bones and Branches." - Billboard Magazine

"A whisper of an album, lovely without being precious, moody without being beleaguering." - No Depression

"Lou Rogai, who records under the name Lewis & Clarke, artfully mixes his multi-layered vocal tracks with finger-picked acoustic guitar, Hammond organ, Rhodes piano, and lap steel." - Acoustic Guitar World

"A gifted newcomer" - Magnet

"The mystical side of (Lewis and Clarke) is heightening...thoughtful, lightly philosophical, exploratory folk with a rustic, natural-world mood." - Erasing Clouds

"Elements of eastern instrumentation blend with acoustic plucking, sounding at once exotic and accessible, ala Macha on morphine" - Stereogum

"A set of melodies that achieve a haunting beauty, perhaps most defined by its cohesiveness; it is more than a collection of songs, each listen unearths a new layer." - Lost At Sea

"This is an album you simply must own." - Smother.net

"A pure music experience that whispers half-remembered truths to the soul, as Rogai easily soars above so-called "acid folk"/"freak folk" conventions by exhibiting amazing clarity and a sense of spaciousness in his songs... striking in its authenticity and ability to convey empathy and even inspiration. It is gentle and wild, an abundant feast of simple fare that nourishes the heart." - The Morning Call

"Full of gentle drones of bowed cello(courtesy of former Rachels member Eve Miller), ripples of plucked harp strings (by Russell Higbee of Man Man), slow-motion cascades of horns and synths, and existential rhythms of tabla and trap-kit snare, all tied together in patient, sophisticated arrangements that highlight Rogai's spiritually inquisitive lyrics and quietly demonstrative vocals." - Athens Flagpole

"Kaleidoscopic layering over sophisticated lines, the rosy folk songs within are tasteful, only bordering on sentimental, and graciously free of pretense...reverent, almost hymnal in quality." - The Aquarian Weekly

"An intelligent revelatory light into the heart of life and love" - Detroit Metro Times

TEAM ROBESPIERRE Announce Album Details * Shows w/ Japanther, Numbers, VHS or Beta and more!

Announce Debut Album "Don't Tell The Scene" out November 6th on Impose Records * Shows w/ VHS or Beta, Japanther, Numbers, and more!

Brooklyn's Team Robespierre rock the super fun synth-punk, with an emphasis on the punk. Their raw, electric sound reminds me of (broken-up) bands like Q and Not U, El Guapo, and Fugazi (if Fugazi had keyboard players, that is). These five guys are the perfect band to ask to play when you want to turn your broken-down loft or vacant parking lot into an instant party space. Just have them plug in their guitar, bass and keys and watch them go for it. Fun noise will be made, with all members dishing out vocal jabs. Team Robespierre utilizes a whole mess of both machine and man-made beats, and you can certainly dance to their thumps. Just don't confuse this with dance-punk. This is more like punk-dance. You will have a good time at this show. -- OH MY ROCKNESS

Think tough beats melodic breakdowns and hot grease actually try electro-gangsta-punk. Bring a 40 and shorty to bump and grind, trip the light fandango and perhaps a two-step will be your fate to their hyphy meets hardcore scream-alongs. -- Todd P

Team Robespierre is among New York's most energetic bands with their brand of pounding, abrasive rhythms and chanted, child-like vocal melodies. -- L MAGAZINE

They may have destroyed their tour van in the California desert, but Team Robespierre built their dance-core up all over the country and the people came. Having successfully returned from their first full US tour intact (read their tour diary here for punk-rock touring 101 information overload, as The Team recount the venues and acts they're playing with along the way, including Japanther, Roxy Pain, Pterodactyl, The Deathset, Attractive and Popular, and more).

Back in the safe confines of Brooklyn, Team Robespierre have set to work on releasing their debut album. Having spent most of their summer recording Don't Tell The Scene with the help of Colin Marston (Orthrelm, Ghengis Tron, Stay Fucked), they have enlisted Kayrock and Wolfy at Kayrock Screen Printing (Ex Models, Oneida, Liars, Matt Pond) to handle the artwork and will also be working with Allen Cordell (Dan Dacon’s “Big Big” video) to produce a video for the single ”88th Precinct”

Dirty punk powered by raw synth hooks and battered dance machine beats, Team Robespierre are ringleaders of Brooklyn's DIY dance party scene, one that stands as a model for the mayhem brewing in basements and warehouses across America. Though they formed in Brooklyn during the winter of 2005, the members of Team Robespierre grew up in similar punk rock scenes in New York, Denver, Minnesota, Texas, Poland and Jersey, playing in bands like Thulsa Doom, Morning Glory and Hipster Bloodbath. But as Rex, Tom, Ty, Mike and Jim got older, their record collections expanded into noise, indie, electro and new wave. And while all (and none) of these genres might influence their sound, what comes across most when seeing these guys is their raw energy and unwillingness to separate themselves from the crowd.

The Team mashes 80s new wave and 90s hardcore into a dance-ready hybrid that comfortably shares stages with bands as diverse as Dan Deacon, Japanther, An Albatross, Leftover Crack, Parts And Labor, Best Fwends, USA Is A Monster and Kylesa. Having already embarked on three tours in 2007 and recently enlisting a drummer for their complex electro-punk arrangements, the Team felt the timing was right to record an album's worth of material.

BIRDS OF AVALON Tour w/ The Flaming Lips!

Announce US Dates w/ The Flaming Lips!

"The new album from North Carolina psychedelic indie-rockers the Birds of Avalon, Bazaar Bazaar is an exciting whirlwind psych-prog-pop rawk record in the tradition of Cheap Trick, Blue Cheer and Thin Lizzy. " - WXPN in Philadelphia

"It’s the sound of mirror shades, beaver hunts, shag-carpeted muscle vans and cleaning your weed on a gatefold sleeve. In the words of Geezer Butler (or was it Roger Glover?)—stonkin’!" - Harp Magazine

"BOA shudders and roars with the acid-burnt psychedelic prog/blues bluster of the '60s shot through with contemporary punk/pop energy and invention." - Chord Magazine

"70s guitar jams that would do Lynyrd Skynyrd proud" - Outburn Magazine

"Tap a Coors party ball and grow your hair out." - Alternative Press

"Bazaar Bazaar is a lesson in classic rock 'n roll" - Pastepunk.com

After a 7-year stint in a prison van with the double drum, frenetic rock n’ roll assault known as The Cherry Valence, guitarists Cheetie Kumar and Paul Siler, felt a growing desire to move on. In a final whirlwind year that saw The Cherry Valence touring Europe multiple times, the couple, Kumar and Siler, got married and made the difficult decision to divorce their band.

Returning home hitched and band-less, they began late night clandestine meetings with neighbor and local crooner Craig Tilley (The Weather), where they hatched a plan to form Birds of Avalon and laid the foundation for what was to become the first batch of Birds Of Avalon songs. Still needing to round out their line up they snared their favorite area drummer Scott Nurkin (Dynamite Brothers) and soon added multi-instrumentalist and fanatical 4 tracker, David Mueller on bass.

With the release of their debut full length, Bazaar Bazaar, Birds Of Avalon have developed a unique psychedelic meets progressive sound that yields feelings that transcend the conventions of both. Skillfully channeling elements of a time in Rock since past, while maintaining their place in the lineage of North Carolinian independent rock heritage. Easily traversing an area between raw blues rock and atmospheric pysch-pop. Birds Of Avalon “can tear it up in a three-minute barn-burner or lure you into an extended psychedelic journey, wandering schizophrenically like a Brian May guitar solo,” so says Jens Lekman of Cincinnati City Beat.

Bazaar Bazaar was released on May 22nd on Volcom Entertainment and was recorded and produced by Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Let’s Active, Wilco), Greg Elkins and Brian Quast.

More praise:

"It sounded like Sloan gone psych. No, it sounded like Led Zeppelin gone pop. No, that's not quite it either. Black Sabbath meets The Beatles? In fact it's none of those, but the truth lies somewhere in the middle of those comparisons.” - Jim Kopeny (Chicagoist, Donewaiting, Tankboy)

"Like Led Zeppelin psychedelic blues, Black Sabbath's bag of riffs and a love for all things rockin' from the '60s and '70s... The band's debut is a freewheelin' ode to most of what's great about rock'n'roll." - Aversion.com

"The record is so ceaselessly accessible I can't help but call it charming." - The Chicago Reader

"The North Carolina-based group has released a surprisingly strong debut with Bazaar Bazaar, a chugging pop-rock (with emphasis on the latter) effort in a space where ELO, Wolfmother and Sweet coalesce." - The Houston Press

“Led by a pair of guitarists who seem, by sheer force, to be powering their amplifiers rather than the other way around, Birds of Avalon make thunderous, precise rock with enough proggy smarts to keep you on your toes.” Steve Haruch for the Nashville Scene

"Where the Cherry Valence perfected a hybrid of AC/DC, Motörhead, the MC5, and the classic-rock-by-way-of-garage-punk revivalism of the Hellacopters, Birds of Avalon are more about layers, psychedelia, and the song." - Memphis Flyer

“A band capable of delivering three-minute rock bliss and expansive psychedelic workouts with equal chops.” – Salt Lake Tribune

Shows of the week!

Wednesday, August 29th - O'DEATH @ the Spiegeltent in NYC w/ Death Vessel!
O'DEATH's brand of Appalachian-stomp-punk has been turning heads for the past year thanks to their monstrous live show and insanely amazing album, "Head Home" (just reissued on the Ernest Jenning imprint). Performing for the second time at New York's beautiful Spiegeltent (their first time headlining), the band appropriately finds themselves back in what may be the best venue in New York, a beautiful European burlesque carnival of sorts. Do not miss this exclusive appearance (and the early performance artists! Absolutely jawdropping).

Absolutepunk reviews "Addicted to Bad Ideas"

The World/Inferno Friendship Society - Addicted To Bad Ideas
Posted on 08-27-07 by Tom Good

Release Date: September 11th, 2007
Record Label: Chunksaah Records

How do you describe something that is pretty much indescribable? This feat becomes all the more daunting when confronted with an album that is pretty much an amalgam of countless genres of music and massive orchestration. The World/Inferno Friendship Society’s latest disc combines an impressive array different styles and moods ranging from upbeat piano pop to full on orchestral sections. The interesting part is that the mash up results in one of the most ambitious releases of the year and an undeniably cohesive progressive punk rock opera worthy of listen upon listen.

The Inferno teamed up with director Jay Scheib to create the operetta based on the life of Peter Lorre. Told through his eyes, the disc is a concept of sorts about alienation, the twentieth century and a fall from grace through a battle with addiction. The theatrics work their way into the sound in more ways than just the telling of the story. Without even knowing the grander scale of the album, a listen through will bring to mind images and over the top sounds suited for the stage. Frontman Jack Terricloth paints wonderful imagery while simultaneously showing off a broad vocal range tailored to keep up with every twist and turn the band throws at him. Often times his voice can sound like Murder By Death’s Adam Turla (see “With A Good Criminal Heart”) and at others his dramatic voice sounds as if he is commanding his band mates such as in the circus march of “And Embarked On A Life Of Poverty”. Addicted To Bad Ideas, more or less, follows a chronological timeline describing the life and times of our tragic-comic antihero, but the method in which it is sung is incredibly original and runs the gamut of emotion. Who would have thought the life of such a troubled individual could possibly be so damn catchy and upbeat? The vocal melodies are unique and the female background vocals blend perfectly so as not to sound like a gimmick. Every single line sounds meticulously crafted in grandiosity in order to realize the massive vision of the band and director,

The music is where Addicted To Bad Ideas really thrives. There is something for everyone on the disc, plain and simple. The 9 piece collective can achieve sounds normally suited for a much bigger production or orchestra without losing the sound of the independent rock scene. Typically when bands incorporate massive orchestration into their sound, it can either sound amazing or pretentious and forced, The World/Inferno Friendship Society certainly fit into the first category. No part of this album, despite it’s enormous ambition and scope, sounds the slightest bit out of place. The fifties swing of “Ich Erinnere Mich An Die Weimarer Republik” wouldn’t sound out of place on a Bruce Springstein record and, oddly enough, is followed by the completely different sound and twinkling piano of “I Just Make Faces”. This is an album, but with the amount of material covered in each piece, every song can stand alone as it’s own distinctive piece of the story, both lyrically and musically.

To be honest, I expected something big from the band based on their past work, but I did not expect to be blown away. I was dead wrong. With certain songs, I found myself enjoying genres of music that I previously would have turned my back on. Saxophone solos sounding cool? Damn right. The World/Inferno Friendship Society ooze a cool sense of style and maintain a sound true to their vision without seeming pretentious. In fact, Addicted To Bad Ideas is oddly endearing and one can only imagine what it will sound and look like live. In the meantime, the band has produced an incredibly complete full length that proves that an album can unite drama and indie rock in a theatric production sure to merit a standing ovation.

SHOCK CINEMA Release "Our Way is Revenge" TODAY on Kanine Records!

(featuring members of Trail of Dead, Rogers Sisters, and Dragons of Zynth!)
Release Debut Album "Our Way is Revenge" Today on Kanine!

(L-R: Destiny, Miyuki, Danny, Autry)

"We were left gobsmacked by the trancelike, dubadelic vibe, equal parts postpunk and noir rock" - Harp Magazine

"Goth-weaned art-punk a la early Glass Candy" - Village Voice

"Squelching guitars and drawn-out rhythms evoke everyone from Can to Glass Candy" - Creative Loafing

While on tour with Celebration, Miyuki Furtado of the Rogers Sisters met some of Katrina Ford’s Atlanta-based friends. Finding like-minded musicians in British-born vocalist Destiny Ming Wan Montague and guitarist/melodica player Autry Rene Fulbright II, he offered to play drums for them if they ever made it up to New York.

Shortly thereafter, not without a little encouragement from TV on the Radio’s David Sitek, Fulbright and Montague relocated to Brooklyn. With a co-conspirator in Miyuki, the way was paved for Shock Cinema. And that way is revenge.

If you ask whom they are taking revenge on, you'll be hard-pressed to find an answer, though Sigourney Weaver - do the anagram - is one possibility. If you ask about collective influences, you'll get a barrage of responses including Can, David Lynch, Barrington Levy, Ghostface Killah, Os Mutantes.

Their debut “Our Way is Revenge” sees release August 21st (Kanine Records). It is largely born from songs the three recorded after getting together only once. The record includes six original tracks, a J. Clark (Pretty Girls Make Graves) reworking of "Howling Door," and a Subtitle (aka Giovanni Marks, now the band's official guru) mix of the all-in-French "Art of Noir."

For the rest of 2007 and into 2008, Shock Cinema will focus on touring and recording tracks for their next effort at Sitek’s Stay Gold Studio with Chris Coady (Blonde Redhead, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, Gang Gang Dance). Danny Wood (And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead) is currently filing out the line up on bass guitar.

BALD EAGLE Release "Hot Shoulders" on Emergency Umbrella!

Release "Hot Shoulders" TODAY on Emergency Umbrella * TOUR HARD!

"Nestled in the vigorous vein of SADAHARU, HOOVER, and COUGARS (minus the horns), this Missouri-based quartet absolutely tears it up on Hot Shoulders." - Pastepunk.com

"A rambunctious smorgasbord of funk beats, killer metal riffs, and screaming outbursts, with unbridled vigor belying the band's goofball subject matter." - Flavorpill

"Bald Eagle accomplishes a lot by picking and choosing elements of hardcore, hard rock, emo, soul, and even a bit of Sly Stone-style psychedelic funk for its tracks." - Punk Planet

"A hell raising combination of Tiger Style Records-era Rye Coalition, The Jesus Lizard, and Chicago's Cougars." - The Daily Copper

Columbia, Misssouri's BALD EAGLE are a strange and mysterious brew who's brand of rock madness is practically unmatched by any bands hailing from the big city. They play fast, guitar driven, musical equivalents of muscle spasms or brain aneurisms, one might equate to the groundbreaking sounds of Swing Kids or Nation of Ulysses. Some might call this, just not givin' a f*ck. Still others might see this as a dizzying assault of technicality and full frontal nudity.

BALD EAGLE are fans of, and draw influences from, indie-punk stars Drive Like Jehu and Hoover, and 70's psychadelia legends Deep Purple and Yes, whose elements can be heard throughout their new (and second) full length album "Hot Shoulders" (out August 21st on Emergency Umbrella). Most songs coalesce with mixtures of improvisational jazz and European hardcore (see the Refused / JR Ewing) and whose subject matter include things like cobras, eating pizza, fear of sharks, The Princess Bride, transvestites, and shady, creepy people.

What's more, BALD EAGLE seriously like ripping-it live. Past performances include dates w/ !!!, Call Me Lightning, The Apes, The Paper Chase, Ad Astra Per Aspera, and others, and already have set in place a slew of Summer and Fall dates lined up to support their new album.

There are many ways to describe BALD EAGLE, but one thing is for certain, TURN THEM SHITS UP!

"Hot Shoulders" Tracklist:

1. Those Are Cobras, Man
2. Jammin The Wedge
3. Sharks Are Fucked Up
4. Rodents Of Unusual Size
5. The Lunch Helicopter
6. Lemon Lime Be On Time
7. Trans Dyn - O - Myte
8. Shady Creepers
9. We. Have. You. Did.
10. Stompin Up The Stairs (With My Moustache On)
11. What's All This Brew Ha- Ha?

COALESCE Reissue "There is Nothing New Under The Sun" Today on Hydra Head!

Reissue "There is Nothing New Under the Sun" TODAY on Hydra Head * New "Salt and Passage" 7" September 11th on Second Nature * Continued live destruction!

"There's no shortage of great bands doing their own thing, but few capture the intensity, lyrical vision, and technical drive, that Coalesce owned in the late 90's" - Pastepunk.com

"A ferocious blend of brutal hardcore and vicious metal... incredibly infectious" - Metal-Observer.com

"One of the finest heavy bands in recent memory" - PunkNews.org

Generally speaking, covering the songs of Led Zeppelin sounds like a bad fucking idea. After all, the reason Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones all played those monster jams is so you don't have to. But the astute gentlemen of COALESCE have never let a bad idea get in the way of good music, so they released a 7-track EP of shit-hot Zeppelin covers upon an unsuspecting world back in 1999, played a few shows, and then promptly broke up for a second (or was it a third?) time. We're not really sure, but what we do know is this: Eight years later, the cease and desist letter still hasen't rolled in. Which is precisely why "There is Nothing New Under the Sun" is now being presented with eight additional jams, including those from Coalesce's split EP w/ Boy Sets Fire, the band's first attempt at "Supernaut" not included on the In These Black Days Sabbath tribute seven-inch series, an Undertow cover, and a Get Up Kids cover. Think of it as the hammer of the gods pounding a few extra stakes into the music industry's litigious heart. But don't actually say that out loud: You'll sound like a dick and we might get sued.

Coalesce, along w/ all the Hydra Head bands of the 90's, destroyed, re-conceptualized, and rebuilt hardcore to be 100 times more fierce, courageous, and audacious. While kids ready to cut it up in the pit whined about breakdowns now having off time drumming and manic, inventive guitar lines, true fans of progression rejoiced. Coalesce were legendary in the live arena, and the first row at their shows can attest to how "surprising" it can be receive a drum-kit in the face.

A ton of hardcore bands tried their hand at covering some classic band. But not many ever thought they had the spectrum and vision to tackle an entire album's worth of covers by one artist, and have that artist be Led Zeppelin. But then again, Coalesce weren't concerned w/ whether Ray Cappo or Ten Yard Fight fans would approve. At the time, the first issue of "There is Nothing New Under the Sun" was an underground smash.

Hydra Head is pleased to announce this release as a "+" edition, now featuring other covers we can'r believe they actully did AND did really well - Boy Sets Fire, Undertow, Get Up Kids, and even their first stab at cover Ozzy and the boys. And there's a Coalesce original on here too!

"There is Nothing New Under the Sun" Tracklist:

1. Immigrant Song (Led Zeppelin)
2. Heartbreaker (Led Zeppelin)
3. Black Dog (Led Zeppelin)
4. Out on the Tiles (Led Zeppelin)
5. Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin)
6. That's the Way (Led Zeppelin)
7. Thank You (Led Zeppelin)
8. I'm Giving Up On This One (The Get Up Kids)
9. Vehicle (Boy Sets Fire)
10. In The Wilderness (Boy Sets Fire)
11. Bob Junior (Coalesce original)
12. Supernaut (Black Sabbath)
13. Casting Away
14. That's The Way Redux (Led Zeppelin)
15. Thank You Redux (Led Zeppelin)
