These Arms Are Snakes Sign To Suicide Squeeze * Start Recording For New Album This Week!

Sign To Suicide Squeeze * Begin Recording New Album To Be Released October 7th!

Blistering riffs and sweepingly violent guitars are controlled with brutal precision, while superb breakdowns juxtaposed with subtle melodic tones lend songs an almost epic quality - Rock Sound Magazine

Exhilarating punk that wears both heart and brain on its sleeves - Kerrang

Suicide Squeeze (continuing to acquire one of the best rosters in independent music) and Solid PR are very excited to announce the signing of Seattle-based, critically acclaimed apocalyptic post-punk quartet, THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES!

THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES conduct turbulent blends of angst-ridden destruction and jangular jolts of post-punk reminiscent to the early sounds of Swing Kids, The Refused, or Nation of Ulysses. To date the band has toured w/ the likes of Minus The Bear, Blood Brothers, Big Business, Cursive, Mastodon, Against Me!, Isis, Pelican, Hot Water Music, and other likeminded heavy hitters in today's thinking man's punk and metal circuit.

The band has announced they will begin recording their new album on May 9 at Red Room Recordings in Seattle, WA, recording with Producer/TAAS drummer Chris Common (Mouth Of The Architect, These Arms Are Snakes, Minus the Bear), for a (yet to be titled) release on October 7th courtesy of Suicide Squeeze.

THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES have previously released a handful of EP's and two full-lengths for labels such as Hydra Head and Jade Tree (most notably 2006's Easter LP), and aside from their Good Friday 7" in 2006, the new album will be the first long-player for the Suicide Squeeze imprint.

CMJ.com Interviews Torche!

huge thanks to Matt Kiser and the entire CMJ.com staff!

TORCHE: Light A Fuse, Watch Them Burn
May 2, 2008
By Matt Kiser

The scalding hot, light-blue flame of a welder's torch has nothing on the Miami band of the same name (including that final letter "e"). Torche, the unruly pseudo-stoner rock band, has been making a name for itself since 2005 as a physical, pummeling live group that relentlessly barrels forward both on record and in the club. Despite the limitations of capturing this deafening sound on tape, the quartet still manages to assure that same prevailing essence on wax, a feat singer and guitarist Steve Brooks downplayed in his recent chat with CMJ. It's been a few weeks since the band unleashed their mammoth sophomore LP, Meanderthal (Hydra Head), an album with a tongue-in-cheek name that lures listeners in, then whacks them over the head with chunky distortion and indie rock melodic sensibilities. They're set to embark on a month-long tour with the Sword in May in support of the record, and all eyes are on the band with the hottest name in metal.

CMJ: How's the response been so far to the new album?
Steve Brooks: So far, the response for the new album has been incredible. A little too good to be true. I think the bar might be set a little higher for us because of our history with artwork and production, too. We like to have the members of this band do more than just the music. Rick [Smith, drummer] and I did the [self-titled album's] cover and [bassist] Jon Nunez recorded most of it, as well as the In Return EP. [Baroness'] John Baizley did an amazing job with the artwork for In Return. This time around, we decided to have another band member contribute to the cover. [Guitarist] Juan Montoya did all the characters for the new record. Juan's art has really made a theme to Meanderthal. I think it's unique and fun. We're touring for the next six months straight. It's a little exhausting, but we're trying to cover as much ground as we can.

CMJ: You're a notoriously loud and abrasive live band. How did you try to capture that same essence on tape when working on the album?

SB: It's really hard to replicate the live sound, so we don't try too hard to do so. It's different, ya know? The pressure of writing and recording a full-length in two weeks was intense. I ended up recording a lot of Juan's rhythm guitar tracks for certain songs, and he did mine as well for others. We spent most of the first week doing drum and guitar tracks. The second week was spent on vocals and bass. Mixing took a couple days, and we left Kurt [Ballou of Converge] alone. He knows what he's doing. I think due to the time we had, we weren't given the option of analyzing every little thing. That might've been a blessing.

CMJ:I read that you made limited-edition cassette tapes of the first album. Why re-release your old album, and why on cassette?

SB: We did a limited [run of] 100 tapes of the self-titled record for our last tour. Those are sold out. We're going to do the same for our In Return EP and possibly the Meanderthal LP. Some people still love tapes. Unbelievable, but true.

CMJ: The band always has a boatload of vinyl editions, colors and packaging options. What's the attraction of releasing records this way?
SB: Some people don't buy music anymore because the packaging is dog shit. Why not put out some incredibly ridiculous packaging with the music? I grew up on cool-looking records, and if we have a label that's willing to do some dumb, expensive stuff, why not? We're having fun with it. In all honesty, I still buy music. I haven't figured out how to download and burn CDs myself. I've done that on purpose, because I'm lazy and stuck in my ways. Although, I have friends that burn me stuff, I'd just rather not do it myself. If I began downloading and burning CDs, it would become a bad habit. I don't have a problem with getting free music, especially since I'm guilty of it, occasionally. But, if you like a band, support them by going to shows, buying merch and records. It's fucking expensive to be a musician, and we all have bills to pay when we get home. I'm a little on the wire about the whole limited-edition merch/records, I guess because I don't care about that stuff. But if it sells and helps our band pay off debts, then I'm all for it. Some of the crazy colored vinyl looks cool as shit, too, even if black vinyl sounds better. Hee hee.

TinyMixTapes Reviews David Karsten Daniels' "Fear of Flying!"

this rules, thank you TinyMixTapes!

AbsolutePunk & Treble Review The Phenomenauts "For All Mankind!"

huge thanks to Tom Good and Terrance Terich for their support!

Click the links below to be taken to each review:

There's something innocent and endearing about this group of five men who seem less like wannabe rock stars and more like ten-year-olds playing with a refrigerator box that becomes their shuttle to space. In "Man Alone," one of the first songs on the new album, the singer (not sure whether it's Commander Angel Nova or Corporal JoeBot 2.0) shouts "we should have a mission / we should have a purpose." The Phenomenauts have found theirs, blast out the rock and roll tunes, put on a great show, make the kids dance, and have fun doing it. - Treblezine.com

“Team Robespierre are everything you’ve ever wanted in a live band.” - TinyMixTapes.com

Read Pastepunk's interview w/ Team Robespierre HERE!

Since their debut “Everything’s Perfect” was released in January on IMPOSE records, the Team has spent the past three months bringing the party to both basements and huge stages alike. Touring almost non-stop, it all culminated at this years SXSW where they played 13 shows in Austin with the likes of Crystal Castles, the Cool Kids, Matt & Kim, Man Man, Talib Kweli, Dan Deacon and Parts & Labor to name a few.

Now, Team Robespierre has been tapped to join the Teenagers on tour kicking off this week! Look out for more surprises, including a trip to the UK to celebrate the release of "88th Precinct" overseas, followed by a hometown performance this summer @ McCarren Pool w/ Liars! More info below!

More about Team Robespierre:

Powered by a dirty punk rock ethos, synth hooks and programmed dance beats, Team Robespierre has helped resurrect a Brooklyn punk scene that has been waiting to embrace the raw energy of our nation's basements and late night warehouse dance parties. With a sound that melds the future and the past, the Team brings back memories of 80s new wave and 90s hardcore, and after IMPOSE owner Derek Evers saw them play a show in the spring of 2007, he ended up so drenched in beer and human sweat that he had to sign these guys – making “Everything’s Perfect” the first official full-length for both the band and the label.

Formed in Brooklyn during the winter of 2005, the members of Team Robespierre were initially connected by their roots - having all grew up in similar punk rock scenes in New York, Denver, Minnesota, Texas, Poland and Jersey, playing in bands like Thulsa Doom, Morning Glory and Hipster Bloodbath. But as Rex, Tom, Ty, Mike and Jim got older their record collections expanded to include noise, indie, electro and new wave among other genres. All and none of these genres can be heard in their recordings or live shows. But what comes across most when seeing these guys is their raw energy and unwillingness to separate themselves from the crowd.

The VSS Reissues "Nervous Circuits," May 20th on Hydra Head!

Announce Nervous Circuits Reissue, out May 20th on Hydra Head!

Back in 1997, we were all crammed into A. Ron Turner’s apartment back in Boston, talking about the first Miltown seven-inch like it just gave us a reach-around in the men’s room. On the other side of the country—San Francisco, to be precise—four dudes we’d never met put out a record called Nervous Circuits. Originally released on Honey Bear Records, the album unveiled the kind of punked-up robotic noise and feverish melodies that anticipated the vast and varied keyboard-enhanced punk/rock stylings of These Arms Are Snakes, The Faint and Death From Above 1979. Featuring former Angel Hair members Sonny Kay (vocals) and Joshua Hughes (guitar) alongside bassist/keyboardist Andrew Rothbard and drummer Dave Clifford, The VSS filtered Black Flag’s nihilism through a litany of crooks, hooks, edges and angularities (and their own light show, as seen on the bonus live DVD) to create “an environment of total saturation of sound, light and motion.” It was our kind of shit, but we just didn’t know it yet. And then the fuckers had to go and break up—before forming Pleasure Forever (Clifford, Rothbard, Hughes), Year Future (Kay) and Gold Standard Laboratories (Kay). But hey—thank Christ for reissues.

A brief history and disclaimer:

The VSS began in Boulder, Colorado in January 1995 and ended unceremoniously in July 1997. In that time the band relocated to San Francisco, toured the U.S. twice and Europe/UK once, released a series of 7-inch EPs and issued Nervous Circuits, its only full length album. It was recorded and mixed over the course of one week of sessions (usually lasting upwards of 16-hours per day) in October 1996 at the same Denver studio in which The VSS recorded its debut EP. Tracking of Nervous Circuits began on a Monday morning and the last mix was completed that Friday (Halloween) at midnight. The band then raced across town to play a late-night show that was one the most intense and unhinged performances of its brief tenure.

To this day, The VSS is commonly known for two things, 1) its inventive use of horror-film keyboards, angular guitar, unusual rhythmic shifts and vocal effects in creating a dark, jarring sound that merged punk, goth, psychedelia and experimental rock, and 2) its "crazy" light show, an unprecedented notion for the underground basement show set. These two components are said to be influential on the aesthetics of myriad bands to follow in the decade since the band's demise. Of course, the synthesizer was nothing new in punk rock. However, by the mid-90s, the synthesizer was such anathema to musicians still reveling in the faux-grit of grunge, that to the members of The VSS, adding keyboards to underground noise-punk seemed the perfect prescription for what had become a staggeringly dull scene.

The live footage included on the enclosed bonus DVD has been assembled from VHS tapes traded and distributed by fans over the years. Considering that many of the copies that found their way to us were fifth or perhaps even tenth generation and shot on consumer VHS camcorders at all ages venues, the video content is far from professional. However, we feel that these video clips capture the essence of The VSS aesthetic -- to create an environment of total saturation of sound, light and motion within a realm far distanced from the tedious trappings of arena rock posturing and production values. The footage here represents a good deal of the disorienting, unnerving and cathartic live experience of The VSS... perhaps an essential component to placing Nervous Circuits in context today.

* The VSS members currently play in: Year Future (Kay), Red Sparowes (Clifford), Rabbits (Hughes) and Andrew Douglas Rothbard (solo.)
