Kayo Dot Recording New Album for Hydra Head!
Enter Studio / Begin Recording Fourth Full-Length Album To Be Released on Hydra Head Records!
Led by Toby Driver and Mia Matsumiya, the NYC sextet just released their third album Blue Lambency Downward on Isis man Aaron Turner's Hydra Head records. The opening, title track is a mysterious 10-minute meandering of bells like crickets, bursts of patient guitar, jazzy drum fills (kept to a toppling spaciousness), electronic pulses, and chiming vocal melodies. It kinda feels like a psychedelic boat trip piloted by Ghost, albeit it with bigger "pop" tendencies. - Stereogum
Fresh off of a US tour opening for Trey Spruance’s amazing SECRET CHIEFS 3, KAYO DOT has arrived in Seattle to begin recording their second full length release for Hydra Head Industries.
Throughout the tour, they performed and refined the new compositions, bringing them to new audiences and honing them for the upcoming recording, with Toby Driver also picking up bass duties for SECRET CHIEFS 3 each night. The new music features another sonic shift in the ever-evolving sonic lexicon of KAYO DOT. Expect a more visceral rhythmic sound with overdriven chorus basses, cave-echoed horns, vocals and strings, tuned struck metal, and a purveying melodic darkness threaded delicately throughout the sound of the music. Once again, the record will be recorded by Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth, Six Organs Of Admittance) who also recorded KAYO DOT'S critically acclaimed Hydra Head release from 2008, BLUE LAMBENCY DOWNWARD. Expect the release of the new music on Hydra Head in Fall of 2009, with a September / October European tour and US tour to follow the album release! - Toby Driver / Kayo Dot

AOL Noisecreep Talks to Bergraven's Pär Gustafsson About New Album, The Macabre and More!
Bergraven Is Melancholy but Not Black Metal
Black metal has always been about individualism and not being "one of the sheep," yet more and more albums seem to be coming out of the woodwork with the obligatory forest scene artwork, indecipherable band name, buzzing lo-fi guitars and tortured screams. Sweden's Bergraven -- aka sole band member and multi-instrumentalist Par Gustaffssons -- has shunned such cliches to make some of the most evolved, compelling and expressive extreme music we've heard in a while. In a sea of misanthropic music makers, Bergraven stands alone as a band that truly adheres to the black metal ideology. Ironically, Par rejects the black metal tag entirely.

The Aquarian Interviews Paper Chase Frontman John Congelton!
The Paper Chase: Interview with John Congleton
If The Paper Chase frontman and de facto leader John Congleton was found reciting the lyrics of his latest masterpiece, Someday This Could All Be Yours Vol.1, to passersby on a city street, he would probably find himself in a padded cell. If instead he recited his prose on public access in a cheap suit with an 800 number below him, he might have a few million followers. Luckily, Congleton, known for his producer credits on Modest Mouse, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Marilyn Manson and The Mountain Goats is not a T.V. Evangelist or a homeless crackpot (that I know of anyway). Instead, for the past 10 years he has been the driving force behind The Paper Chase, mastering their brand of jagged, dissonant indie-pop.

MetalSucks Interviews Scott Kelly of Neurosis / Shrinebuilder!
SCOTT KELLY OF NEUROSIS: THE METALSUCKS INTERVIEW
As one of the founding members of arguably one of the most important metal bands, Scott Kelly helped navigate Neurosis from a crust punk genesis to the lords of abstract doom they’ve become. Despite going on to semi-normal adult lives not built around touring, they’ve still managed to put out some of the most challenging and, ultimately, best music of the decade. Kelly himself splits his non-Neurosis time among Tribes of Neurot (the band’s ambient side project), an acoustic solo career, the post-apocalyptic folk of Blood & Time, and, most recently, stoner metal wet dream Shrinebuilder, featuring Melvins drummer Dale Crover, Sleep/Om bassist Al Cisneros, and doom icon Wino. In an interview Scott was kind enough to grant MetalSucks – conducted during his trip to the airport on his way to some European Neurosis shows, stopping once to get through airport security and ending when the plane was ready to take off – he discussed his collaboration with the gentlemen in Shrinebuilder, his history with Neurosis and long-time collaborator Steve von Till, and punk’s limiting ethos vs. metal’s acceptance.

The NY Times Talks Xasthur's "All Reflections Drained!"
huge thanks to the NY Times staff for their support!
Evil Chords and Jazz Flourishes
The California black-metal project Xasthur is one guy, Malefic. Malefic is Scott Conner. Scott Conner makes music that sounds as if it has gangrene. “All Reflections Drained,” Xasthur’s largely instrumental new record (Hydra Head) is misery on misery: unapologetic cardboard-box drums, background muttering, disorienting echoes, a guitar sound like cold, granular gas. And, yeah, there’s something to it.

Metal Injection Reviews / Streams New Big Business album "Mind The Drift!"
huge thanks to the MetalInjection staff for their support!
CD review: BIG BUSINESS, "Mind the Drift"
Two years after releasing the catchiest sludge metal album in history, BIG BUSINESS are back, this time with a guitarist. For whatever distinction they've lost from being a bass-and-drums duo until now, they've kept their knack for facelifting infectiousness out of a heavy low end. Noob TOSHI KASAI rarely plays anything resembling JARED WARREN's bass progressions, but both musicians somehow sound organized under the charge of COADY WILLIS, who proves that creativity in metal drumming needn't come with blast beats.

Absolutepunk Praises New Album from Chamberlain frontman David Moore!
huge thanks to the Absolutepunk staff for their support!
David Moore - My Lover My Stranger
(Doghouse Records)
It is virtually impossible to put into words the impact the indie rock band Chamberlain and Split Lip had on the mid-to-late 90s emo scene. Even harder to define is the admiration critics, music consumers and other parties had for the band's frontman/lyricist David Moore, as well as its chief songwriter and guitarist Seth Rubenstein. Even in the band's latter years, when they wholly reinvented their sound, the critics and fans came in droves. When the band unexpectedly broke up in 2000, the flowering praise reached almost unimaginable heights.

Punknews Reviews Clues' s/t Debut!
huge thanks to the Punknews staff for their support!
Clues
Clues
(Constellation)
Clues won me over immediately with its amazing first three tracks. “Haarp” demonstrates the Montreal group’s incredible attention to detail and subtlety. The range of tempo and dynamics on the three-minute tune span the spectrum, starting with minuscule phrases busting into noisy fermatas that in some small way remind me of early `90s Flaming Lips. When we finally get a beat, we hear first a slower quiet segment and then a toe-tapping section full of dirty guitars to finish the song. “Remember Severed Head” asks "Who here wants to sleep in the dragon’s mouth? / Who here wants to feel?," beginning the album’s obsession with medieval imagery but then mentions something about “a mushroom cloud tattoo.” The band grooves along with a catchy-yet-minor ‘doot-doot-doot’ vocal line doubled in the guitar, high-stepping electric piano intervals and alternates between string-cloaked softer segments and chaotic moments of crashing ride cymbals. “Approach the Throne” starts with clanging percussion and another minor-pop ‘la la la’ melody, which is later thickened up by some brass. The chorus breaks down with horn chords as Reed digs into that china cymbal.

MetalSucks Reviews Xasthur's "All Reflections Drained"
huge thanks to the MetalSucks staff for their support!
ALL REFLECTIONS DRAINED: XASTHUR IS CERTAINLY NOT WORKING ON HIS TAN THIS SUMMER
The great part is that all this attention has sent Xasthur in a frenzied retreat back underground with All Reflections Drained. I will wager that few hipsters will have the fortitude to get past the initial harmonized dissonance of the aptly titled opener “Dirge Forsaken” even if it’s on limited cassette edition (yeah you read that right). The rest of the album continues to shock and shows again just how far he’s come from his original Burzum aping all those years ago. Droning ambiance leading into ugly guitar harmonies with spooky whispering and sublimated wailing all layered to the basement and back.

Iron Age Announce New Album on Tee Pee Records!
Gargantuan guitar riffs conjure images of astral behemoths while unnamed terrors lurk in the unwavering, resolute rhythm section. The demon doesn't truly emerge though until the blood-curdling, blasphemous growls of Jason Tarpey crawl to the startling forefront. Fans of the vocal madness of King Diamond or G.I.S.M.’s Sakevi can rejoice at this reverb-drenched shrieking.
The Sleeping Eye is a sprawling modern heavy metal opus that doesn’t forsake its hardcore roots, but follows them to their sonic extremities, forging a sound that honors the crossover forefathers while treading new ground in brutal atmosphere and doomy ambiance.
The Sleeping Eye Tracklisting:
1. The Sleeping Eye
2. Dispossessed
3. Burden Of Empire
4. Materia Prima
5. A Younger Earth
6. Arcana Pt. I
7. Arcana Pt. II
8. The Way Is Narrow
