Nylon Band Crush: Get Back Guinozzi!

BAND CRUSH: GET BACK GUINOZZI!
A trippy-pop French band? C'est magnifique!

French pop runs the gamut, from Serge Gainsbourg to Stereo Total to the Plastiscines.

But if there’s anything they have in common, it’s making totally catchy, utterly whimsical, occasionally naughty songs—something that Get Back Guinozzi! has down pat.

Jello Biafra + The Guantanamo School Of Medicine Announce Debut Album!

Jello Biafra
And The Guantanamo School of Medicine
Announce Debut Album, "The Audacity of Hype," out October 20th on Alternative Tentacles!

As frontman of the Dead Kennedys, America's most politically astute and savagely ironic punk rock band, Jello Biafra became a hero of the 1980s underground. Even if his musical projects since have been shorter-lived (his 1990s group Lard delivered his traditional polemic with an industrial rock backing) Biafra has not been idle. As record company boss, or spoken-word performer, he has continued to espouse leftist causes, even if music has not been a priority. Evidently, things have now changed, if not much. New band GSM contains familiar elements: Biafra's penetrating, highly strung vocals, some particularly heavy guitar playing, and of course, a unique take on modern life. New songs like Strength Through Shopping, meanwhile, demonstrate that this is a man still on a mission. - The Guardian UK

Though many of Jello Biafra’s “collaborations” (Lard, No WTO Combo, Tumor Circus, & records with Melvins, DOA, Nomeansno, & Mojo Nixon) would have been called solo albums by other artists, this is his first full-time working band since Dead Kennedys, and it shows. Also on board are Ralph Spight (Victims Family, Freak Accident, Hellworms) Jon Weiss (Sharkbait, Horsey), Billy Gould (Faith No More), & Kimo Ball (Freak Accident, Carneyball Johnson, Mol Triffid, Griddle).

In the twenty or so years since his brainchild Dead Kennedys officially disbanded, Jello Biafra has made a career of spoken word gigs interspersed with musical collaborations with some of the most compelling figures in underground music. Recording projects and touring with the likes of Melvins, No Means No, DOA, Mojo Nixon and Lard (with Ministry's Al Jorgensen) among others have kept his "hardcore as political weapon" message sharp, but the lack of his own band made these collaborations usually short-lived and left Biafra with a ton of songs that had never seen the light of day.

Inspired by The Stooges gig on Iggy Pop's 60th birthday gig in San Francisco, Biafra laid plans for his own 50th birthday party and finally decided it was time to start a band of his own. After cramming rehearsal for a month the four piece band called themselves Jello Biafra and the Axis Of Merry Evildoers! The band, which featured Jello, Billy Gould, Ralph Spight, & Jon Weiss, took the stage in a sold-out 2-night stand at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall. Flush from that exhilarating triumph, the band did 9 months of rehearsal & writing, and added ace guitarist Kimo Ball. This led to the recording of "The Audacity of Hype."

Now christened Jello Biafra and The Guantanamo School of Medicine, the band's record was produced by Biafra and engineered by Hip Hop producer and long time Jello co-conspirator Matt Kelley (Hieroglyphics, The Coup, Digital Underground, Victims Family, Tumor Circus) at Prairie Sun Recording in Cotati, CA and San Francisco's Hyde Street Studios.

The band's twin guitar attack retains some of the space-punk overtones and spy-music-on-meth chaos of Dead Kennedys while adding a healthy dose of Detroit style proto-punk, flavored with Weiss' industrial excursions into metal percussion.

Topically, the album explores how our forced Iraqnophobia and Homeland Insecurity continues to feed lawlessness at the top ("The Terror Of Tiny Town") vs. a runaway police state and class war towards the bottom ("Three Strikes," "Electronic Plantation" (originally done by the No WTO Combo, Jello's one-off collaboration with Krist Novelselic (Nirvana) & Kim Thayil (Soundgarden). "Clean As A Thistle" becomes more timely every day as "Family Values" blowhards from Sanford to Berlusconi get caught in sinful trysts, while album closer "I Won't Give Up" offers an age of Obama anthem on how change comes from agitation from below, not from glamour and sound bites from the top.

Thirty years on, Jello Biafra has made an album that solidifies and expands his uncompromising vision and updates it for the new century, with a powerhouse band that promises to be a terrifying live machine, currently in Europe Jon's brother Andrew Weiss (Rollins Band, Ween, Butthole Surfers) filling the live bass position recently left vacant by Billy Gould's return to Faith No More.

* All of the art is by Shepard Fairey, with assistance from AT collaborator & graphic artist John Yates. The in-your-face art is a parody of the famous Obama “HOPE” poster by Shepard Fairey himself. Watch a clip of Jello talking about the band's debut album here, and check out a slew of rough versions of the songs below on the Guantanamo Myspace page!

BrooklynVegan Interviews Jesu / GREYMACHINE Frontman Justin Broadrick!

An Interview with Justin K. Broadrick
by Klaus Kinski

As a young mullet-headed headbanger growing up in the pre-internet late 80's and early 90's Cape Cod, my only resource for expanding my metal horizons was Metal Maniacs. Sure, I enjoyed the titans of that era (Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden, etc) but what I craved was the most vile, lightning fast death metal in the world. Thanks to Metal Maniacs, I was exposed to the likes of Deicide, Napalm Death, Carcass, Entombed, Morbid Angel, Repulsion, Gorguts, Cathedral, Morgoth, and many many more. The one album from that era that immediately blew my mind, and has stayed an important part of my life, is Godflesh's Streetcleaner. To this day the bassy-death-rattle-feedback intro for the lead-off track "Like Rats" still gets me amped.

Jambase Reviews Clutch's New Album "Strange Cousins From The West!"

Clutch: Strange Cousins From The West (Weathermaker)

There may be no more together hard rock band today than Clutch. While one's personal taste may argue the supremacy of say Mastadon or Drunk Horse, in their basic constitution this is as pure, inventive and motherfuckin' serious as rock 'n' roll comes. And like the best in their breed, Clutch, despite a passing resonance with their compatriots, deliver what is utterly there own, a vision rippling with muscle, covered in matted hair, howling like a wounded beast atop high vistas or snarling red-eyed in gullies. This is the animal that pounces on Strange Cousins From The West (released July 14 on Weathermaker Music), where the quartet continues their excavation of raspy blues with pummeling, brilliant efficiency.

Punknews Reviews New Albums From Keelhaul and Cave In!

Keelhaul
"Keelhaul's Triumphant Return To Obscurity"
(Hydra Head)

Keelhaul has determinedly resurrected the ghost of Killdozer’s and Karp’s sense of humor and attitude, but this time as a progressive thrash rock band. And while the band riffs harder than Geddy, Neal and Alex, you don’t have to worry about all those pathos getting in the way. Singing is sparse; time signatures are often turned on their head; syncopation is a requirement, but song titles like “Everything’s a Napkin” and “THC for One” put the kibosh on taking anything too seriously.

Cave In
"Planets of Old"
(Hydra Head)

Fans of any of Cave In's previous work will find something to enjoy on their new EP, Planets of Old. Whether playing blistering metal akin to their Beyond Hypothermia days or classic rock riffs reminiscent of Jupiter, Cave In skirts the boundaries effortlessly, leaving their distinctive mark on each.

Dark Meat Announce New Album and US Tour!

Dark Meat
Announce New Album, "Truce Opium," Out October 20th on Emergency Umbrella * US Tour w/ An Albatross * Fun Fun Fun Fest Appearance and More!

Imagine 15–20 people onstage all done up like hippie Indians, with horns, shakers and at least a few people who looked like they had nothing to do up there—spewed out a thick, danceable mass of sound! - Time Out NY

At the center of this maelstrom is McHugh himself, the ringleader and chief songwriter. Not only does he demonstrate résumé-quality personnel management skills, but his lyrics-- whether conjuring a dead friend, detailing an arduous spiritual journey, or just flipping the bird to anyone in earshot-- walk the line between angry and hopeful, fearful and fantastical. - Pitchfork

When first tasting Dark Meat, it’s important to have big ears as open to new sounds as possible. You need the sheer aural real estate, because otherwise it’s tough to fully absorb the impending longhaired hurricane. Rest assured, nothing sounds quite like them. As you descend into their lair of chaos and freakishness, prepare for unbridled, dirty sonic bliss. Dig beneath the grime and distortion, and you will strike it rich—free-jazz, acid-rock diamonds blanketed in punk rock coal. - Pop Matters

Athens Georgia’s multifarious psychedelic roadwarriors DARK MEAT have geared up for another get-go of pillage-and-freakout in the name of their newest offering, TRUCE OPIUM. A long period of lineup changes, label complications and heavy touring across North America and Europe has focused the band into a diamond-hard and transformative experience: they’ve trimmed their lineup to a highly-effective and barely-anemic 9-piece, and, in the process, have organically developed an intense and diverse instrumental chemistry. Truly, TRUCE OPIUM retains all the insane eccentricity, rawness and sonic bombast of their infamous live show, and evinces a sharpened essence and unified vision burnished by the last three years spent spraying themselves across the cosmos in their cramped tour-van.

In terms of heightened vision and sonic-execution, TRUCE OPIUM is a huge step forward for the band -- as it augments their celebrated Albert Ayler, Stooges and Neil Young obsessions with more a abstract, cosmic tack: pronounced Eastern influences abide via the use of acoustic drone instruments like tanpura, bulbul tarang and sitar, prayer-like group chants and the study and reverent application of polyharmonic Sygyt and Kargira Tuvan throat-singing. Last year, bandmembers workshopped, rehearsed and performed at The University of Georgia with a carnatic classical troupe from South India. This amazing and humbling opportunity, along with their involvement in several local improv, free-jazz and noise ensembles have broadened the band’s sonic and structural scope.

Deep Krautrock and Japanoise bearings also surface; their perpetual tour-van immersion in the sounds of NEU!, Amon Duul II, Les Rallizes Denudes, LSD and Boredoms push their willfully improvisational passages into weirder, wilder territory. And the vaunted Free Jazz and New Orleans Marching Band influences persist through The Vomit Lasers, Dark Meat’s longstanding horn-section. However, where the band once enthusiastically essayed pieces by The Ayler Brothers, Pharaoh Sanders and Sonny Sharrock, the ensemble has now organically assimilated the music’s feral energies and rarified colors into its aesthetics of arrangement, dynamic and performance. Make no mistake, though, TRUCE OPIUM, at its twisted heart, is a redblooded psych-rock record, as a lived-in and durable love of Velvet Underground, Yardbirds, MC5, Fairport Convention and Crazy Horse continually and joyously warps main songwriter Jim McHugh’s approach to composition and execution. And the passage of material into the raw hands of his seasoned collaborators dually insures that the resultant High Magic will be spirited, raw and unlike anything else you’ve every heard.

* Dark Meat share members with Of Montreal, Olivia Tremor Control, Circulatory System, Elf Power, Gnarls Barkley, Instruments, Lil Wayne's Touring Band (for real!) and Nymph.

DO MAKE SAY THINK (Thursday) In the spirit of Godspeed You Black Emperor — or its sister ensemble, A Silver Mt. Zion OrchestraDo Make Say Think is a brainy, instrumental post-rock band from Canada that favors slow, excruciatingly dramatic guitar swells. But, unlike its peers, Do Make Say Think has a jazzy bent, which keeps its music from feeling too self-serious or immobile. You Are Here (The Maze) is a performance festival in a sculptural maze taking place at Williamsburg's Death By Audio from September 10 - October 2, 2009. Emphasizing the sprawling and interconnected nature of New York's underground, a trip through the maze offers a peak inside NYC's diy art/music scene. A meditation on passage and desire, You Are Here engulfs the space and presents beckoning inhabitants, dead ends, and uplifting epitaphs. Medium and genre vary and overlapping and simultaneous performances are frequent, each performer establishing a different corner or dead end as his or hers. Participating artists in the 3-week festival include Calvin Johnson, Screaming Females, Skeletons and the Kings of All Cities, Zs, Excepter, Mick Barr, The Coathangers, The Present, Loud Objects, Grooms, Shooting Spires, Extra Life, Mike Pride, Dan Friel, Pterodactyl, Nine 11 Thesaurus, and many many others.

The following performance schedule should be used only as a loose guide. You Are Here subverts prefab expectations for both audiences and performers - there is no prescribed order, start time or end time, duration, location of performance, relation of audience to performers, and so on. All of the participating artists have been asked to create something site-specific since the performances will, in fact, take place within the maze. Audiences will be asked only to expect something unusual.

More about this year's maze...
The anti-festival festival OR why this festival is different from all other festivals:

You Are Here was first presented by Trouble at Chashama's Visual Arts Space in Midtown Manhattan. This year’s maze returns to Brooklyn and is a real for us by us type of affair. You Are Here is a festival drawn from within the scene, not the work of corporate sponsored parties wishing to develop markets. No one gets free shoes or gift bags full of stuff and the festival doesn’t push any specific beverage or brand. This festival also won't fly people in from all over and make a big super-festival. You Are Here is a local affair, mostly local bands will play, and many of them have personal and ongoing relationships with each other and with Trouble. You Are Here is about Brooklyn and about the diy scene in New York in general. It’s about activism and about relationships and about immediacy and not least about a community that, perhaps in spite of the internet, still exists on a local level.

More about TROUBLE (Sam Hillmer and Laura Paris):
You Are Here is also about domesticity in several senses, not least of which is the fact that the artists Trouble (Sam Hillmer and Laura Paris) are in fact a married couple with a child and a home in Bushwick which also houses both of their studios. As any one who is an artist knows, your relationship is either part of your creative life or it’s competing with it. Trouble plants themselves firmly in the first category with their work together on the maze. Together, they are devoted to creating extreme environments that have no exterior, public art both condoned and illegal, and other kinds of visual/sound art intended to be used for some purpose. Their work is about community, spirituality, politics, craft, and beauty. Outreach is a part of all of their projects, as is what they call “in-reach:" designing events that strengthen the ties within the DIY art community and the art world as a whole. The inspiration behind the imagery in this year's Maze project includes "the six realms" from Tibetan Buddhism and other elements of Buddhist cosmological theory.

“Whether you are a big deal or a small deal, there is always some type of deal going on” - Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche

Other partners in this project include Death By Audio, Entertainment for Everyone, Panache Booking, Social Registry, and Build It Green.
