Brooklyn's Zs have always walked a jagged line between 21st Century composers and bratty art-punks; their voluminous, decade-strong output evokes everything from Schoenberg's jagged beep-boops to Glass's hypnotic minimalism to the headbanging abandon of crusty loft-party noiseniks. Despite having armloads of singles, EPs, and live albums, New Slaves (due May 11 on the Social Registry) is only their second proper record, and it moves the band fearlessly into more rhythmic, noisy, and downright terrifying waters.

Torche Kickoff US Tour w/ Coheed and Cambria, Circa Survive + New Release News!

Kicking off this week, and with their highly anticipated split release with Boris hot on their heels, Miami's TORCHE will head out on a month-long US tour supporting Coheed and Cambria and Circa Survive. The tour will span both coasts, travel throughout the Midwest, and head to select cities in the Great White North.

In addition, Torche and Hydra Head have announced the band's new split release with Boris, entitled "Chapter Ahead Being Fake," which will see the light of day on June 29th on 10" vinyl.

And since teasing is our sort of our thing... the band just finished self-recording their next batch of hits for release late August 2010... but we'll tell you more about that later...

San Diego-based dub/rock/psychedelic-jam phenoms SLIGHTLY STOOPID have just announce a massive headlining US tour accompanied by legendary hip-hop group Cypress Hill. The tour, named Cauzin Vapors... Legalize It, and riding behind the political undertones of "legalizing it," will kick off in mid-July and see both bands traveling from California to New York, along the entire eastern coastline, and across the country, with stops at this year's acclaimed Lollapalooza festival in Chicago and the Mile High Music Festival in Colorado. Prior to their July dates, SLIGHTLY STOOPID will start their Summer festivities by traversing the entire West Coast with the mighty Steel Pulse and friends and label-mates The Expendables, in addition to more Summer festival performances to be announced.

Slightly Stoopid has recently logged some serious road miles as part of their annual Summer Ampitheater Tours. Past creative touring partners and lineups include Snoop Dogg, The Marley's, G Love & Special Sauce, Ozomatli, Sly & Robbie and Pepper. They have also shared the stage with Dave Matthews Band, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, The Roots, Toots and the Maytals, Bad Religion, among others over the course of their career. In addition to their incessant criss-crossing of the U.S., which also includes previous appearances at other prestigious festivals such as Coachella, Austin City Limits, and New Orleans Jazz Fest, the group has played sold-out shows in Australia, Japan, Guam, Amsterdam, Portugal and Denmark, the U.K., Germany, Holland, and the Dominican Republic. “Without [the fans], we’d just be playing at the bar,” admits Kyle. “They make it worth our while – when we go out and people are having that good of a time, the energy goes back and forth. Just a good time – we rely on each other’s energy.” And all you have to do is look at the list of artists that Slightly Stoopid has played with, to get a feel for how much of a large and diverse audience they appeal to.

The Slightly Stoopid story can be traced to Ocean Beach, California, when childhood chums Miles and Kyle formed the group in 1995, mixing reggae and punk sounds into one smooth stylistic cocktail. Soon after, late/great Sublime frontman Brad Nowell caught wind of the group, and signed them to his Skunk Records label – while the band members were still in high school. A pair of releases soon followed for Skunk - 1996's punk-tinged SLIGHTLY STOOPID (featuring a guest appearance by Nowell on the song “Prophet” – later covered by Sublime and released on their box set, EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN) and 1998's surf-inspired cult classic THE LONGEST BARREL RIDE. Most recently, the band has continued their mainstream successes, seeing their last two albums, 2007's CHRONCHITIS, (which featured guest appearances by Guru of Gang Starr, Angelo Moore of Fishbone, Money Mark of the Beastie Boys and G. Love) and 2008's SLIGHTLY NOT STONED ENOUGH TO EAT BREAKFAST YET STOOPID, charting in the Billboard Top 100, with both albums appearing on the band's own Stoopid Records.

To date, the band has sold over 750,000 records on their own label, has performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and has had their songs appear on hit television series' Scrubs, The O.C., Cribs, and more. Slightly Stoopid has also consistently been selling out venues and ampitheaters across the country for the past 3+ years and consistently appear on Pollstar's top grossing tours.

Kayo Dot Release and Stream New Album, "Coyote," Out This Week on Hydra Head

Falling right in line with the rest of Kayo Dot’s towering back catalog—a genre-less lot if there ever was one—Coyote is one mighty mind-fuck of an album. Its widescreen sense of controlled chaos and pitch-black melodrama carries a lot of emotional weight, too, as it’s the product of a painful collaboration between frontman Toby Driver and filmmaker/photographer Yuko Sueta. Painful because the latter passed away last fall after a long battle with breast cancer.

While her loss can be felt throughout the record, something triumphant emerges by the end, as “Cartogram Out of Phase” walks off into the sunset alongside brushed drums, hazy horns, and Driver’s first stab at truly Gothic vocals. It’s the sonic equivalent of when you see the word “FIN” plastered across the final scene of an old black and white movie—a chapter closed, with another to begin anew soon enough. Hear what we mean after the jump, as self-titled raises the curtain on an exclusive stream of Coyote, which came out on Hydra Head today...

Cut and Run was recorded by Ben Greenberg at his studio Python Patrol in 9/09. His studio is actually a room in an old Catholic middle school. Very appropriate for a band called Child Abuse. Ben's got a really simple set up there. Besides our own instruments and amps, we just used a couple of mics, a half-inch tape recorder, and Pro-tools. We had attempted earlier to record this record on our own in 7/09 using Logic, but it just wasn't happening.

​Astoria duo Austerity Program take the lunging acrimony of classic pigfuck and subvert it through the evil scrunch of modern extreme metal. They've always sounded a little like Big Black--what with the whole adenoidal howling/abrasive guitar/drum machine thing--but new EP Backsliders and Apostates Will Burn (out May 4 on Hydra Head) brings their Albini worship to its most mature, focused and disturbing end point. Backsliders's four songs, all about five minutes long, are sardonic hateballs, raging like tortured animals conquering the endless drone of existence. Second track "Song 26"--which you can download below--is like Shellac's "Prayer To God" if the sex-starved protagonist actually had a closer relationship to Jesus than women.

Clutch Announce "Live at the 9:30 Club" 2xDVD, Bonnaroo Performances and More!

Maryland hard rock band Clutch is coming up on their 20th year, maintaining a consistent following with constant touring, unique wit, and fearless tendency to mix metal with genres like blues and funk. Much of the band's direction and personality is thanks to Neil Fallon, Clutch's singer, co-songwriter and lyricist who is known for weaving historical, literary and downright nerdtastic references into his hard-banging songs. - Billboard

The Maryland based band has amassed a substantial catalog that includes nine studio albums, five live releases, and a handful of EPs. What's more, throughout the 90's, Clutch's hardcore-influenced, groove-heavy riff rock, helped define that decade's stoner sound, while in the new millennium, their persistent hunger to expand their style brought them into the realms of traditional down-home blues and far-out psychedelic jams. - Revolver

2010 will prove to be the busiest calender year in the career of veteran rock band Clutch. Building on the Top 30 Billboard chart success of 2009's "Strange Cousins From the West" (Weathermaker Music), the Maryland based quartet will internationally issue a brand new epic DVD set called "Live at the 9:30" in mid May. This 200 minute double disc concert film will be sold at the fan friendly price of $19.98.

Disc one features a 90 minute full length concert filmed with seven hi-definition cameras last December at Washington DC's legendary 9:30 Club. In addition to newer fan favorites like "50,000 Unstoppable Watts" and "Let a Poor Man Be," the concert film's first disc includes an electifying version of the 1995 "Clutch" self titled release in it's entirety. An audio version of the full 19 song concert will be exclusively available through iTunes on May 11th.

Disc two is the 110 minute feature film "Fortune Tellers Make a Killing Nowadays," which takes a behind the scenes look at Clutch "on tour" city by city in 2009. This "bonus disc" is not limited to recent Clutch happenings however, as it includes rare band interviews as well as vintage never before seen footage documenting much of Clutch's history from 1991 to the present. Both discs were directed and produced by Agent Ogden, who first worked with the band, on 2007's "Full Fathom Five, Video Field Recordings."

On June 4th Clutch will kick off another leg of thier 2010 worldwide headlining tour. The early summer portion takes the band through the USA, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Greece, Italy and the UK. The band's instrumental jazz rock alter ego, The Bakerton Group will appear as one of the opening acts in North America. Both The Bakerton Group and Clutch will appear on the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival on June 11th and 12th respectively.

In support of the tourdates and the forthcoming "Live at the 9:30" DVD, as well as the current "Strange Cousins From the West" CD, Weathermaker Music will release the new single "Let a Poor Man Be" on May 3rd, with an accompanying video clip and a rare promo only EP featuring unreleased material.

As if that's not enough to keep this hard working rock & roll band musically busy, Clutch and Weathermaker Music are currently preparing expanded CD and vinyl re-issues of catalog pcs "From Beale Street to Oblivion," "Robot Hive/Exodus" and "Blast Tyrant." These three highly anticipated projects will be available digitally and physically at retail and the band's websites on the CD/DVD format on June 22nd, August 17th and October 12th respectively. Double vinyl versions of all three re-issues will be available on November 23rd. Track listings are not yet available, but Weathermaker label manager Jon Nardachone hints at some very exciting details.

"The bonus content of the three re-issues will be entirely different. We're still sifting through unreleased Clutch originals, cover songs, live audio, live video, alternate takes, etc, One thing we know for sure is that each re-issue will have updated and upgraded artwork/packaging as well as additional music from the exact timeframe each CD was first released. This is not about tacking on a couple of unfinished demos to the end of each CD. We're producing these with the knowledge that Clutch fans expect something fresh, yet distinguishably representative of that moment in time. The diehard fan will appreciate these projects in a big way."

Xasthur Announces "Portal of Sorrow" feat. Marissa Nadler

This album, "Portal of Sorrow", is the last Xasthur album, period.
The honorable thing to do is to end the band and not hang around too long, like so many metal/black metal bands do. Enough is enough, right?

I'm not able to make it work anymore. I don't want to turn into one of those bands who rely on too many guests and session musicians to make people interested in their music again. Some help is fine but more than some help is very cheap and it becomes others, not the roots of the band that makes the difference and the music work. I don’t want to fall into that pattern. The motivation and inspiration used to be there full time and now it's not there at all, not for doing Xasthur at least. It is a role or persona that I have simply outgrown. I’ve been saying I’m sick and tired of it all for too long... and now, I’m going to back it up. There are or have been literally 18,000 black metal bands; it does not matter if there's one less.

Just like in the nineties, I made a few recent attempts to put a real line-up together and it still failed; another sign that said “give it up already.”

However, I wanted to end on a better note with this 'Portal of Sorrow' album because the album that came before it, 'All reflections drained', was not up to par and I couldn't finish up with an album that I was less than satisfied with. Now, I suppose any or all goals have been reached and there is nothing more I wish to try with Xasthur and it's time to move on...

Since it would be foolish to give up music all together, I have something else to fall back on that is beginning to take shape. It's a new beginning that I'm quite excited about.

Instead, I'm going to do something different by not performing any kind of metal at all!
There's no use in trying to reinvent black metal or turn it upside down, it's all been done and in the end, it's still metal and will remain within those circles, stereotypes and boundaries no matter what. Overall, I need a bigger change in my life and with music than just trying to change metal.
There isn't anything to lose.

I would ask you to stay tuned for my next project and give it a plug but there's no need to. It's probably of no interest to you and again, it has nothing to do with metal and I'm not trying to keep any connection or ties to it.
I will not name influences, genres or anything of the sort.

Believe me when I say this decision has been well thought out for months and doesn't come out of frustration.
Something I usually hate is comebacks, reunions or reformations of bands. You can be rest assured (for even relieved) that this will not happen.

I would like to say fuck you to so many people it’s not even funny, but that would be just another way of not washing my hands and hanging around, so I won’t bother.
Instead, I would like to say thank you to a handful of people who took an interest in the music over the years and had the patience to (slowly but surely) watch it grow and develop. I'm more grateful than you think; you know who you are and I know who you are.
I'd also like to say thanks to Marissa Nadler for taking her voice to another level, to Ron for helping design the album and to Hydra Head for the hospitality over the last few years.
