Rolling Stone Interviews Clutch Frontman Neil Fallon!

Clutch Frontman Decodes His Sinister Lyrical Visions
by Robert Mancini

Stoner rock stallwarts Clutch return to the road next month, giving fans another chance to congregate and bark along to frontman Neil Fallon’s madman sermons of robot overlords, government cover-ups and long dead civilizations.

Fallon’s bon mots, turns of phrase and sidewalk preacher screeds have carved a unique space for Clutch in the heavy music landscape. And the man who gave us lines like “shadow of the New Praetorian / tipping cows in fields Elysian” and “life inside the biosphere, dodecahedron fever’s here / sporting scarlet letters of genetic imperfection, dear” is once again in blissfully twisted form on Strange Cousins from the West, giving us a paranoid pastiche of assassins, drifters, backwoods monsters and chemical weapons. But how are these sinister visions born?

MetalSucks Talks To Keelhaul Drummer Will Scharf!

KEELHAUL’S WILL SCHARF GIVES GOOD INTERVIEW

Here’s how Keelhaul drummer Will Scharf introduced himself and the band via e-mail: “I understand you’re doing research on senility, bad potty habits, and coping with walkers and Metamucil. We are the perfect subjects.” Old and incontinent Scharf may be, but he’s also hilarious, and a motherfucker of a drummer. There’s heavy jams and scrumptious fills a-plenty on Keelhaul’s new album Triumphant Return to Obscurity, out August 18th on Hydra Head, the Cleveland math- metallers’ first release in six years. It offers the kind of ultra-tight, largely instrumental ass-whuppin’ that just doesn’t come around that often anymore.

Black Feelings Announce Debut Album on Alien8 Recordings!

Black Feelings
Announce Debut Self-Titled Album Out October 13th on Alien8 Recordings!

Black Feelings are the essence of a power trio: each member of the three-piece exhibiting a great deal of power while the whole remains balanced. Consisting of two former members of Montreal’s Les Angles Morts, the band has developed a unique a hybrid of the British post punk and experimental scenes that spawned the likes of This Heat, Gang of Four and the Pop Group with heavy traces of psychedelic-goth and cold wave. Like American band The Liars, Black Feelings’ penchant for combining a variety of influences to conjure up a sound that is both retro and vitally fresh at the same time. The band’s main vocalist and drummer Owain Lawson is kept busy as he sings and holds down the rhythm section alongside fellow founding member and bassist Brian Mitchell, while the sound is rounded out with shimmering guitar and synth flourishes provided by Kyle Fostner.

Listening to Black Feelings self-titled debut is never dull, as moody vibes ebb and flow throughout the long player carried by propulsive bass and drums. For a small band these guys have a huge sound. The drums have an almost war song intensity that helps drive the music alongside the bass, guitars, and synth all the while delivering really catchy anthemic songs. The feeling one experiences listening to this self-titled debut is very positive, yet with a lingering feelings of darkness hiding in the shadows.

In their two years of existence Black Feelings have managed a couple of tours of the Eastern U.S. as well as an Eastern Canadian tour in support of Tyvek. During this time they have managed to release a cassette as well as 7” single and have another 45 rpm on the way via UK label We Be Records. For this upcoming full length the have enlisted the help of engineer Mark Lawson, who’s credits include Arcade Fire, Beirut, Final Fantasy, Akron Family and The Unicorns to name a few.

* The Black Feelings' debut recording is adorned with beautiful artwork courtesy of ex-Aids Wolf guitarist Chris Taylor and will be issued on CD, vinyl LP and digital formats and was mastered by James Plotkin.

Do Make Say Think Announce New Album on Constellation Records!

Do Make Say Think
Announce New Album, Other Truths, Out October 20th on Constellation Records!

The ever-expanding and contracting Toronto quintet Do Make Say Think's sixth full-length Other Truths is made up of four long tracks, "Do," "Make," "Say," and "Think." (It's like taking "self-titled" to the molecular level.) Three go beyond the 10-minute mark -- which is where you'll find opener "Do." It's guest vocals are provided by the Lullabye Arkestra. (Elsewhere, Akron/Family lend their pipes to the album.) The piece goes through a number of dynamic ups and downs and passages horned, stringed, synthesized, and otherwise, but a blow-by-blow would diminish its overall power and arc, so just sit down and dig into it. - Stereogum.com

The sixth full-length from Do Make Say Think defiantly features four long-form tracks, three of which clock in at over 10 minutes, and all of which trace the inimitable musical arcs that have made this band justly celebrated for their unique sonic palette and vibrant distillation of compositional forms and influences into some of the past decade's most consistently rich and rewarding instrumental rock.

Bucking the trend towards diminishing attention spans, immediate gratification, snappy digital singles and things that go 'pop' right out of the gate, DMST admirably stick to their roots and allow the vines that spring from their fertile musical garden to wind, curl and climb for as long as required. More than ever, the players keep their heads down, creating wonderful multi-movement instrumental works (with the occasional mantric or wordless vocal passage, courtesy guest singers The Akron Family and Lullabye Arkestra), overflowing with attention to tone and timbre, animated by unfussy yet ornate harmony, melody and polyrhythm, shot through with ineffable soul. The four songs on Other Truths are vintage Do Make Say Think, and the album represents the first time since the band's debut (recorded over a dozen years ago) that they have found themselves with an entire collection of songs that unfold so organically over long duration. As testament to the unfettered evolution of these tunes, the band has titled them simply "Do", "Make", "Say" and "Think."

Do Make Say Think has always managed to gather, balance and synthesize various poles simultaneously - ragged/precise, dirty/clean, atmospheric/ stratospheric - forging sonic narratives that combine broad strokes and clusters of detail. Perhaps more than their overtly 'post-modern' commingling of various musical genres (psych, jazz, dub, folk) this less conspicuous, indefinable ability to maintain such a consistently enthralling fusion of instincts is the true mark of the band, yielding a music that sounds and feels so unforced, natural and human. Certainly a key part of this unquantifiable equation is the band's self-production, which has shaped their sound from the beginning, and grown along with it. Led by Ohad Benchetrit and his home studio Th' Schvitz in Toronto, along with Charles Spearin and Justin Small, DMST has developed a canny and novel toolbox of recording and mixing techniques that contributes significantly to their sonic identity.

Ultimately it is tricky to distill what has made DMST so compelling to so many critics and fans over their 13-year history, but inarguably something beyond the sum of its parts has always sparkled through their music, an amalgam of many elements that seem present all at once, on every song and through every album: cerebral, emotional, atmospheric, visceral, cosmic, pastoral, synthetic, organic, meditative, ecstatic. Other Truths rallies them all once again, in new and dynamic ways, bearing the distinct imprint of the band's sound – a brilliant addition to the band's canon.

* Other Truths is available on CD in a custom gatefold cardstock jacket and in a first pressing on deluxe 180gLP that includes a limited edition poster (unique to the LP package), an artwork insert printed on heavyweight translucent paper and a CD copy of the album all packed in a thick 24pt. paperboard record jacket. The album is also available digitally.

XLR8R Reports:

The latest collaboration to come fresh out of the pressing oven over at Hydra Head Records will soon come thundering down the side of the mountain with a magnitude that's sure to tip the scales. Pairing up for an October 27 release in CD and double-LP format will be none other than Canada's ambient dream-metal titans Nadja with the Texan psych-doom destructos in Pyramids. The long list of guest appearances on the album is quite a social gathering for some of the best from the ambient, metal, and noise genres. On board for this project is Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil), Chris Simpson (Mineral), James Plotkin (Khanate), Colin Marston (Dysrhythmia, Behold the Arctopus), Albin Julius (Der Blutharsch) and more. In celebration of their upcoming August 20th to August 23rd New York and Philadelphia 20 Year Anniversary performances, The Bouncing Souls have announced news that their "20 Year Anniversary TV Special" will be premiering at all four shows, kicking off each night's extravaganzas.

From the Chunksaah Records and Bouncing Souls headquarters:

"The entirety of the "20th Anniversary TV Special" will be premiered at the NYC and Philly shows. Perhaps you've laughed your ass off the the 'Chunksaah Board Room' segment and bobbled your head along to the 'Airport Security' musical selection... well, don't you want to see which of the 'executive's' ideas became reality? Pete loves juggling!

So, how do you really celebrate a "20th Anniversary TV Special" Premiere? With your family and your old friends. Lifetime and 7 Seconds both took us on tour, in 1993 and 1994 respectively, when nobody else even knew who we were or cared. We wouldn't be a band without their help or their influence or their long-lasting friendships. Come join us. It's time to party!!!!!"

Oxbow To Reissue "Fuckfest" Album September 15th on Hydra Head!

There’s a curious romance at the heart of Oxbow. Curious, because you might not initially equate such a notion with a band who first introduced themselves to the world via an album entitled Fuckfest. - Decibel

The Oxbow discography - six albums, starting with 1989’s Fuckfest and building to 2007’s The Narcotic Story - is a compelling and powerful journey through one man’s obsessions with sex and violence, told through throbbing, occasionally quite noisy post-blues art-rock. - The Wire

Can you believe OX BOW has been a band for 20 fucking years? Neither can we - mostly because they appear to be so young and good-looking (and because at least one of them will beat us up if we don’t say that). And yet our reissue of the band’s 1990 debut proves that they were once much younger and even better-looking. Originally released on CFY/Pathological, the aptly titled Fuckfest is a pornographic snapshot of a burgeoning musical force in its formative years; a raw, naked display of desperate humanity and abject terror; a decisive collision of Midwest noise, and all-American trepidation.

Fuckfest Tracklist:
1. Curse (5:52)
2. 30 Miles (5:48)
3. The Valley (5:50)
4. Bull’s Eye (4:03)
5. Yoke (6:13)
6. Hunger (9:19)

Oxbow is one of the rare bands that exhibits such a glacial lack of compromise, from the start settling into a style that's harsh at best, and using music outside of their bubble as base componentry rather than outright influence. A personal colleague of mine and vocal critic of modern blues declared in a moment of exasperation that the two best bands working in that idiom were/are Arab on Radar and U.S. Maple. Compile that list for real with Oxbow on top and you might have a reasonable argument. - Dusted Magazine

Best known for vocalist Eugene Robinson's cathartic live performance (which includes stripping, howling, and pelvic-gyrating), Oxbow has carved a very unique place for itself in the post-rock scene. - XLR8R
