The NY Daily News Talks to Takka Takka!

huge thanks to Jim Farber and the entire Daily News staff!

Takka Takka launches an Afro-pop Attack

Takka Takka offers just a sketch of a sound, letting their instruments trace a tune, and dance around the beat rather than pounding the rhythm home and filling in every inch of aural space.

"I come at our music more like a painting than a song," Takka Takka leader Gabe Levine says. "You start with a sketch, then add more colors as you go."

The result has made their music some of the most playful, light and evocative on the New York scene today. Their latest CD, "Migration," suggests more than it states, letting the guitars pirouette and the synths twinkle. Luckily, the melodies prove pretty enough to make it all work. Tomorrow the group brings this impressionistic sound to the Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Punknews Reviews and Streams Let Me Run's "Meet Me At The Bottom!"

so good:

Let Me Run
Meet Me at the Bottom
(XOXO)

Coming from the town of New Brunswick, NJ, lofty expectations are already in place. If a band manages to gain a solid following, do a little touring and put out a record, they still have another mountain to climb. Comparisons to the city's new guard, such as the Gaslight Anthem, the Measure [SA] and Thursday, along with mainstays of the area like the Bouncing Souls, Lifetime and Ensign, would be hard to avoid. However, Let Me Run's combination of passionate vocals, bouncy rhythms and anthemic choruses permeate a sound that would make their New Jersey brethren proud.

Pitchfork Reviews The An Albatross Family Album!

huge thanks to Shawn Bosler and the entire Pitchfork staff for their support!

An Albatross:
The An Albatross Family Album
[Eyeball; 2008]

Robo-spazmatazz genre-splicers An Albatross pack more riffs, time changes, and esoteric rock references in one song than many bands jam into an entire album. Fitting for a bunch of dudes whose credo is some sort of mystical mumbo jumbo of cosmic love, fantasy animals, sci-fi weirdness, and-- as the new album expounds on-- space pilgrimages in search of world peace and harmony. And yet, I think they're serious! These love-in rambles only give the ballistic tunes that much more cheeky appeal. For their third full-length, The Family Album, AA continue their psychedelic aural terror, but dig deeper into the annals of kraut and classic rockdom.

Mouthpiece Announce "Can't Kill What's Inside: The Complete Discography" Out January 20th on Revelation!

Announces "Can't Kill What's Inside: The Complete Discography" out January 20th on Revelation Records!

The late eighties was an exciting time to get caught up in the hardcore scene. While many of the early pioneers had moved along, the scene went through something of a renaissance with a new crop of energetic kids who had seized the power of the music, and molded it into something that was relevant to the style of their times. Leading the pack in this regeneration was Revelation Records, a label that released a batch of seven-inch singles and albums, by bands like SICK OF IT ALL, GORILLA BISCUITS, BOLD, JUDGE and CHAIN OF STRENGTH, and would go on to redefine and reinvent the hardcore scene forever.

Somewhere in central New Jersey, a group of friends attending Ewing High School were spinning these records and going to see their favorite bands incessantly. Their experience would spark inspiration and would together form the almighty MOUTHPIECE.

In between getting their band from the basement to the clubs, an abrupt change happened within the hardcore scene. Most of the bands MOUTHPIECE wanted to share the stage with had suddenly broken up or changed paths. With no concern for the changes in sound and style going on around them, they went along with their original agenda and unconsciously became the band to lead straight edge hardcore into the nineties until their demise in 1996.

Fast forward to 2008 and the inspiration for MOUTHPIECE's formation comes full circle with the release of Can't Kill What's Inside on Revelation Records. The disc contains the band's entire recorded output as well as previously unreleased soundboard recorded live tracks. The packaging contains many unseen photos of the band, as well as a complete listing of every show the band has ever played in their existence. The final product is a labor of love and a sight to see, and proves to be another important installment in the Revelation Records catalogue.

* Mouthpiece are currently showing hints of activity both through vocalist Tim McMahon's DoubleCross fanzine and new band Triple Threat. Mouthpiece have not announced any live shows to date but are not ruling out the prospect.

Big Business Announce New Album "Mind The Drift" Out April 2009 on Hydra Head!

Announce New Album, "Mind The Drift," out this April on Hydra Head Records!

From The Hydra Headquarters:

Big Business is pleased to announce the completion of their new full length album, entitled MIND THE DRIFT.

Big Business are also pleased to announce that they think it turned out great.

Quite a few of those millennial types on the internet have been asking the band things like: "What's up with the new album? Why's it taking so long? How come you guys don't play that one song anymore or have merchandise at your shows?"

While Big Business don't have time to answer all of those types of questions directly, we at Hydra Head would like to take this opportunity to present you with some True Facts about MIND THE DRIFT.

FACT #1:
Producer Phil Ek (insert famous bands like the Shins here) has again evolved the band's grandiose sound and taken the Biz into new sonic territories!

FACT #2:
Guitarist and newest band member Toshi Kasai adds new voice and dimension, and looks good doing it. You can actually hear the handsome.

FACT #3:
Most of the instrumental tracks were recorded at AVAST! 2 studios in Seattle, WA. in June and July of 2008.

FACT #4:
Due to the busy touring schedule of Big Biz and the Melvins, most of the vocals, as well as some overdubs and mixing, had to be postponed until late November of 2008. The album was completed in Los Angeles (well, actually, Burbank to be precise). (That's a two-fer.)

FACT #5:
While recording Jared's vocals, Phil Ek kept a loaded sawed-off shotgun in the control room.

FACT #6:
Hydra Head Records
will be releasing the album on LP/CD/Digital this April. But more news on that later...

If you are internet savvy, you can check out a new, never before heard track called "Gold and Final" streaming on myspace.com/bigbigbusiness... NOW!

* More information including release dates, tracklisting, tourdates and more coming soon!

Tera Melos Announce Free Covers EP and US Tourdates!

tera melos
Announce Free Covers EP and US Tourdates!

Roseville, California math-rock trio Tera Melos hosts an odd party. Minimalism rubs palms with excess; jazz swings with hardcore; chaos emerges from order. The music seems to burst from the ethers and fall into perfect time. - Alarm Press

Tera Melos may have been quiet these past few months while they were busy searching for a new drummer, but in typical TM fashion, they were just planning some more surprises.

In their so called "downtime," Nick Reinhart managed to write and record a full-length album for the new band he started with drummer extraordinaire Zach Hill called bygones. The album entitled by- will see a March 2009 release on Sargent House.

Tera Melos also managed to find their new permanent drummer who goes by the name of John Clardy. Keeping it light while breaking him in, Tera Melos decided to have some fun and record some covers of an interesting batch of favorites, hence the EP Idioms Vol I was born. Also, the band figures, since the songs are covers, they will never be for sale, they will be instead be FREE! Click below for US tourdates and album download!

Tera Melos have also released Misadventures, a strange clip to let the world in on their new John, while tipping their hats to another chap by the name of John, in this never, well maybe never before seen interview.

Pitchfork Premieres Land of Kush Title Track "Against The Day!"

huge thanks to Mark Richardson and Marc Hogan for their support!

New Music: Land of Kush: "Against the Day" [MP3/Stream]

These days the Land of Kush is anyplace with legalized medicinal-marijuana use. But the original Land of Kush was an ancient civilization also known as Nubia, located in the present-day Republic of Sudan. And the stuff the rappers smoke was named after a mountain range in Afghanistan, so yeah. The Land of Kush relevant to this post is a 30-plus-member Montreal ensemble "modeled on classical orchestras from late Nasser-era Egypt." Yep, that sounds like a Land of Kush, all right.

Led by veteran local musician/composer Sam Shalabi, Land of Kush debuted Against the Day in a live performance last June during Montreal's annual Suoni Per Il Popolo, then documented their genre-crossing work in the studio for Constellation. Named after Thomas Pynchon's Against the Day, the album is broken into five sections corresponding with the chapters of the novel. The title track shows how Shalabi harnesses the energy of having so many people in one place to create a chop-heavy sound in the tradition of Amon Düül's Psychedelic Underground epics, spanning psych, Middle Eastern, and North African influences: warbling saxophones, galloping drums, dazzling guitars, shrieking woodwinds, etc. In the context of previous work that Shalabi has called "protest music about Arabophobia," though, it's not just a communal happening; "Against the Day" is also a reminder that the Arab world is much more than "Terrorland." Heavy.

Click to stream "Against The Day" here!

* Land of Kush's "Against The Day" will be released on March 17th c/o Constellation Records

La Strada Announces Debut EP for Ernest Jenning!

Announces Debut EP out February 24th on Ernest Jenning!

Harnessing the accordion, cello, violin and viola, the band transforms the sounds of today's metropolises into that of a picturesque turn-of-the-century European provincial town. - CMJ.com

La Strada offers up the best of the New York indie scene: interesting music made by talented people who have a point of view and a love for what they do. -The Huffington Post

One of the most promising bands in the city. Think Beirut and Neutral Milk Hotel with more focus on traditional Americana. -The L Magazine

La Strada has managed to create an impressive fanbase for themselves very early on, due to their uncanny ability to funnel the romance of old-world instrumentation through new world amplification. With soaring vocal harmonies, accordion, and string-driven melodies revved up on rock and roll, La Strada transports you to the hills of the Balkans, a street corner in Paris, and back home beneath a Brooklyn skyline. Frontman, songwriter and former aspiring astronaut, James Craft, was born in France and has also lived in Northern California, and Romania, and as a result, the band's folk ballads and fiery anthems are infused with a sense of great distance, invoking both nostalgia and awe.

After much anticipation from fans and the press alike, La Strada announces February 24th, 2009 as the release date of their self-titled EP for Ernest Jenning Record Co. The 6-song collection has captured the energy and intricate melodies of the band’s live performances which has already garnered them an accomplished following. From the show stopping, “Starling,” to the inspiring and driving melodies of “Flying,” and “The Sun Song,” the band's introduction to the world is sure to please.
