Alarm Press Interviews Clutch's Jean Paul Gaster!

huge thanks to Kim Manning and the entire Alarm staff for their support!

Q&A: The Bakerton Group and Clutch Drummer on Musical Duality

In the 1990s, eccentric heavy-rock four-piece Clutch created a side project and “alter-ego” blues/jam band called The Bakerton Group. On February 17, The Bakerton Group released El Rojo, produced by J. Robbins and released on the band’s own label, Weathermaker Music.

Drummer Jean-Paul Gaster talks with Kim Manning
about the recording industry, performing in both configurations, and what’s in store for each.

Impose Magazine Calls Red Fang the New Balls Deep!

huge thanks to Jay Diamond for the support and best headline ever!

Red Fang are the new balls deep

I don’t really know if it’s acceptable to say Red Fang are “balls deep,” but I’m just gonna go ahead and try it.

Seriously, I mean check the photo. They’re all just hanging out in a pile of beer, drinking beer, thrashing out stuff that sounds like The Melvins and Black Flag, and they”ll soon be embarking on a tour with Early Man.

These Arms Are Snakes Talk to Decider!

huge thanks to Matt Schild and the entire Decider staff!

Interview: These Arms Are Snakes

The fashionista posing that’s taken hold of the punk scene over the past few years probably isn’t going anywhere. But the shape of punk to come hasn’t been entirely forgotten. Seattle’s These Arms Are Snakes is among the handful of acts putting a true progressive slant on heavy sounds. The band’s latest full-length, 2008’s Tail Swallower And Dove, sneaks a covert appreciation of pop into sleazy, bong-hit jams that writhe around the touchstones of hardcore, metal, and progressive rock.

Magnet Talks New Stinking Lizaveta Album!

huge thanks to Matthew Fritch for the support!

Free MP3 From Stinking Lizaveta

A collective slap to the forehead occurred at MAGNET HQ when we realized our recent 15 In Philly coverage (a 15th-anniversary look at hometown bands) neglected even to mention Stinking Lizaveta. The West Philly trio has been playing instrumental prog/metal since 1996, and hardly a week goes by that the group—brothers Yanni (guitar) and Alexi Papdopoulos (upright bass) and Cheshire Agusta (drums)—doesn’t appear onstage at some local divehole. (In Philly, you don’t go see Stinking Lizaveta; they see you.)

Steve Albini
put them on the bill for All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2004, and Fugazi’s Joe Lally issued one of SL’s records on his label. So what’s MAGNET’s excuse for the glaring omission? We’re kind of scared of these people. They are technically superior musicians and they look like they have ties to the Russian mob. Besides, we’re sure our neighbors over at Decibel have it covered.

Download the title track from the upcoming Sacrifice And Bliss (At A Loss, due March 31) here or stream audio below. Warning: The riffage will dislodge your Thor/Viking helmet beginning around the 2:00 mark.

Artist Direct Talks to Clutch and Bakerton Group's Neil Fallon!

huge thanks to Rick Florino for the support!

Interview: Neil Fallon of Clutch and The Bakerton Group

Clutch is one of those bands that all of your favorite bands listen to, love and copy, but still have never gotten the mainstream recognition they deserve. Perhaps it's because they have remained one step ahead of the public consciousness throughout their entire career. By the time the world catches up, they're listening to some carbon copy of what Clutch did two or three albums before. No Clutch album sounds the same. On each album, they're landing on a different musical planet.

With The Bakerton Group though, they've ventured into a whole new galaxy. The Bakerton Group is Clutch's vocal-less alter-ego. Their latest offering, El Rojo, is a progressive fusion of jazz, rock and southern blues that's quite a head trip. In this exclusive interview, Clutch vocalist and Bakerton Group axeman Neil Fallon spoke to ARTISTdirect.com about dropping the mic for El Rojo, sick new horror movies and the next Clutch album.

Decibel Interviews Clutch and Bakerton Group Guitarist Tim Sult!

huge thanks to Chris Dick, Nick Green and the entire Decibel staff!

The Bakerton Group and Clutch's Tim Sult Interviewed

dB caught The Bakerton Group and Clutch's Tim Sult by surprise. Actually, we didn't. We just played phone tag for a few hours and dB ended up winning the game. Poor Tim.

What’s the Weathermaker about?
Tim Sult: It’s basically an extension of the River Road Records that we did in the early 2000’s. We have proper distribution now, so we’ll be able to release The Bakerton Group and Clutch material with real distribution finally. That’s really what it’s about.

DRT is allegedly on-hold now. It’s public you were dissatisfied with DRT. Does Weathermaker give you the chance to bring it all in-house?
Tim Sult: Yeah, it was time to bring it all in-house for sure. With DRT, everything sounded like it would be a good deal, but everything went sour. Always does with any record deal.

The Bakerton Group’s El Rojo album just came out?
Tim Sult: The Bakerton Group originally started when Neil, our singer, moved out to Denver in the early ‘90s. We basically had nothing better to do, so we start writing instrumental songs in-between tours. Just to practice, really. That was the reason, actually. So, I would say New Year’s Eve 1997, going into 1998, The Bakerton Group played its first show. It took us a few years to finally get The Bakerton Group going. Now, we have Neil on guitar so it all works out.

Clues Announce Album Details and US Tourdates!

Announce Details of Debut, Self-Titled Album out May 19th on Constellation Records * Noise Pop Appearance and US Tourdates Begin This Month!

Devoted chroniclers of the Canadian music scene may already be hip to Clues, the musical project of Alden Penner and Brendan Reed, but now, after building a small cult following on their instrument-packed live shows and online music store villavillanola.com, the supergroup is ready for the next step. - Spin.com

This is the wondrous debut record from Clues. Co-founders Alden Penner and Brendan Reed have been quietly nurturing this project in Montreal since the demise of their respective bands, Unicorns and Les Angles Morts. As a member of the short-lived Unicorns, Penner's songwriting prowess was unveiled in a bright burst of mysterious and kaleidoscopic energy, in the form of a single full-length album (released in 2003) and countless live shows, both of which rallied passionate responses from audiences and critics alike.

Penner's voice, guitar and unique lyrical vision now guide Clues, with humble authority, originality and intent. Wedded to Reed's own superlative compositional and arranging acumen (and awesome drumming, among other instrumental skills) and abetted by multi-instrumentalists Ben Borden (Les Automates de Maxime de la Rochefoucauld), Lisa Gamble (Gambletron, Evangelista, Hrsta) and Nick Scribner (Chaotic Insurrection Ensemble), the band delivered sporadic and fantastic local performances through 2008. They then entered the Hotel2Tango studio to lay down eleven songs in a feverish session during a Montréal winter deep freeze. The resulting album radiates a very special warmth and urgency, full of secrets, smiles, snarls and sing-a-longs.

This debut record yields one undeniable tune after another. It is one of those albums that coheres effortlessly in spite of the restless energy and distinct identity of each song – nothing ever really sounds or stays the same, but neither are there any forced spastics or facile schizophrenics. Forged from postpunk, no-wave and psych influences, Clues compose a rare breed of complex pop anthems that consistently inscribe their own perfect limits, without overreaching and without pandering. The overriding aesthetic avoids ornate decadence and stringent economy in equal measure. An authentic, unfussy and stirringly epic little sonic world unfolds: idiosyncratic and enigmatic, but exuberantly infectious and approachable.

Clues offer up a highly original, intensely committed and hugely satisfying definition of indie rock; we are thrilled to be shepherding it into the fractured world of popular music and we believe it is deserving of your attention and engagement.

* Clues is available on CD in a custom gatefold cardstock package printed with metallic and full colour inks. The record is also available on 180 gram virgin vinyl LP and as a digital release.

Jambase Reviews The Bakerton Group's "El Rojo!"

huge thanks to Jake Krolick and the entire Jambase staff!

The Bakerton Group: El Rojo

The Bakerton Group, aka "the psychedelic instrumental jazz-laden alter ego" of Maryland's Clutch, has tossed their tradition aside again to record something new entitled El Rojo (arriving February 17 on Weathermaker Music). This third time around, Clutch's original four have recruited Opeth's keyboardist Per Wiberg. All five members absolutely shine on this record, which comes off as a vivacious instrumental rock album with grooves that are deeper than many jazz offerings today. What The Bakerton Group has created on El Rojo sounds like something torn from an older page in the Gov't Mule catalog, mixed with a healthy dash of Soulive.

Spin.com Leaks Big Business "Gold and Final" mp3!

huge thanks to the Spin.com staff for their support!

Exclusive MP3: Big Business' Aural Assault
Download some righteous riffage from the band that play with legendary punk rockers the Melvins!

Whether you rock old school metal (Iron Maiden) or new (Queens of the Stone Age) you need to hear the first cut from Big Business' upcoming third album, Mind the Drift (due in April).

Red Fang Announces Debut Full Length on Sargent House!

Threatening to rupture eardrums with unyielding, angular guitars, Red Fang nevertheless wields the multi-ton low end that seduced fans of Big Business. - The Stranger

Red Fang push SST sludge and Thor's hammer riffage through big filthy Sunn amps, and slay Sabbath's rhythm section using the jawbone of Greg Ginn. - The Portland Mercury

These guys are raw, occasionally distorted, and loud as fuck; they've opened for the Sword, the Saviours, the Fucking Champs, and the Melvins, and they've got a distinct brand of metal — shreddin', but with a groove — that's formidable on disc but absolutely kills live. - San Francisco Bay Guardian

Red Fang is the formation of long time friends and collaborators Bryan Giles (Last of the Juanitas, Party Time), Aaron Beam (Dark Forces, Lachrymator), David Sullivan (Party Time, facedowninshit, Shiny Beast) and John Sherman (Party Time, Bad Wizard, Trumans Water, All Night).

Unleashed on New Year's Eve of 2006 in Portland, Oregon, Red Fang stormed out of the gates, introducing a sweaty, seething basement to a new kind of unforgettable fist-pumping, beer-chugging rock music. Since that night, the band has continued with the same intensity, energy, and intimacy to quickly become a touring juggernaut, playing shows all over the US with bands like The Melvins, Big Business, and The Sword, to name just a few.

Residing somewhere between Black Flag and Black Sabbath, Red Fang recall a time when rock was more urgent and horrifying. Synthesizing a variety of heavy music influences into their own distinct musical identity, the band easily shifts from barn-burning punk to mid-tempo, hyper-distorted bass destruction all while maintaining a cohesive sound. Red Fang create gigantic rock songs that are easy to listen to (not easy listening, mind you) and qualify the simultaneous usage of both the thinking and the banging head, which are usually mutually exclusive. Their instrumentation is fluid and effortless, and the vocals are delivered melodically and forcefully. Paired with elemental imagery, the lyrics too are absolutely immense and satisfying without any pretense.

* Red Fang's debut, self-titled full length, is a collection of the band's first two EP's which saw a limited release on Wantage Records. The band will spend the next two months touring the US w/ Clutch before heading out on some headlining dates of their own.
