Spin.com Book Club w/ Clues' Alden Penner

huge thanks to the Spin Magazine staff for their support!

Book Club
Alden Penner of Clues Loves 'Tao of Pooh'
Find out why the ex-Unicorns singer-guitarist recommends the book, which he received as a gift from actor Michael Cera.

Clues frontman Alden Penner reads a lot of books. And though he doesn't necessarily finish them all, the ex-Unicorns man says a wide variety of writing influenced the songs on Clues' self-titled debut. "[A] book I read recently was a history of the Mennonites in the Ukraine, because part of my background is Mennonite," Penner tells SPIN.com. "One of the Clues songs, 'A Perfect Fit,' throws a line around about the two hundred year history of the Mennonites in the Ukraine who are known as a migratory people who were always displaced."

Noisecreep Talks to Maylene and The Sons Of Disaster!

huge thanks to the entire Noisecreep staff for their support!

Southern Goodness With Maylene and the Sons of Disaster

There's an old saying that one is American by birth, but Southern by the grace of God. In 2009, the South remains in vogue, musically-speaking. Maylene and the Sons of Disaster vocalist Dallas Taylor, who has the distinction of being the original singer of a little band you may have heard of called Underoath. The Birmingham, Alabama band is about unleash "III" via Ferret Music this summer and when prodded, Taylor told Noisecreep his top three things about being Southern. He said, "The hospitality is one. Being able to feel at home talking to a stranger and growing up saying 'Ma'am' and 'Sir.'" Taylor also stated that the "laid back life and letting the stress of daily life take a back seat while just enjoying life" is another of the things he likes about being from the South. Last, but certainly not least, the food is another reason Southern-ness reigns supreme. "Southern cooking and soul food is where it's at," Taylor said.

Magnet Premieres New Music from David Moore!

huge thanks to the entire Magnet staff for their support!

MP3 At 3PM: David Moore

Back in the ’90s, David Moore used to front Midwestern hardcore band Split Lip and, later, the more melodic, emo-by-way-of-Americana outfit Chamberlain, an underrated endeavor (1995’s Fate’s Got A Driver could’ve easily made our Lost Classics list) that lasted until 2000. Moore’s solo debut, My Lover, My Stranger (due June 23 on Doghouse), is so far from hardcore shores that you can’t even see Vic Bondi and Kevin Seconds playing beach volleyball. Moore is an amalgam of rough-hewn voices you’ve heard before—a little Springsteen, maybe some Joe Cocker or Ian McLagan and even a little Neil Diamond now and then—and he positively lives inside the songs. MAGNET presents the premiere of “Corners” below.

Nylon Magazine Spotlights Clues!

huge thanks to the entire Nylon staff for their support!

MIXTAPE: CLUES
This band is from Montreal, but their favorite music is anything but.

Clues is like a good mystery: Straightforward, yet beguiling at the same time.

It might have something to do with the fact that the band’s members hail from some of the more influential—and diverse—Montreal bands in the last few years; Alden Penner founded art pop buzz band The Unicorns, which fizzled out before they could even release a second album, and Brendan Reed was behind the drum kit for Arcade Fire back when they were recording their debut EP.

Clue’s first album just came out this week, but to get even more clues about the band, we had Penner and Reed’s bandmate, Lisa Gamble, put together a mixtape for us. As she explains, “In true Canadian tradition, I thought to put together a mix tape that least exemplifies my culture. You will find that none of these songs allude to either our terrible climate or the game of hockey.” So what do they have in common? “Joyfulness—even if they seem angsty.”

Time Out NY Previews Loud Fast Jews!

huge thanks to the entire Time Out Staff for their support!

Ticket Alert: Loud Fast Jews!

Early punk rock was an overwhelmingly Jewish phenomenon, both in its location (New York City), participants (Joey Ramone, Richard Hell, Malcolm McLaren), forefathers (Lou Reed, Jonathan Richman, Bob Dylan) and attitude (wordy, media-savvy, anxiety-ridden). From an admittedly myopic perspective, the genre completed rock & roll’s natural curve—what began with Elvis culminated in the Ramones—while providing a loud, early finale to the rambunctious Jewish-American art experience of the 20th century.

On Thursday, June 11, four Jewish punks—Tommy Ramone, Lenny Kaye, Handsome Dick Manitoba and Blondie’s Chris Stein—will address these issues at “Loud Fast Jews!” The panel, arranged by Guitar World editor Richard Bienstock, takes place at Chelsea’s YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. (Apparently, CBGB was unavailable.) Tickets, which cost $18 ($12 if you can successfully impersonate a student), are available at smarttix.com. Older punks still grappling with the Internet, call 212-868-4444.

AOL Noisecreep Interviews Goes Cube About Debut Album!

Goes Cube Keep It Heavy With 'Another Day Has Passed'

Is it possible to be a "heavy" band without being a "metal" band? One needs to look no further than New York City for the answer, where bands such as Quicksand, Helmet and Unsane have for the most part avoided the metal tag, despite being unquestionably heavy. Brooklyn's Goes Cube are poised to pick up where those bands left off with their forthcoming release 'Another Day Has Passed.' A record of considerable heft, but not really metal in the classic sense.

BrooklynVegan and Others Talk New Big Business Album!

Big Business (new album out now & streaming) & Tweak Bird @ Union Pool in Brooklyn - pics (and tour dates)

photos by Justina Villanueva, words by Black Bubblegum

"After much anticipation, Los Angeles based rock heroes BIG BUSINESS have just released their latest and most epic album to date. Entitled "Mind The Drift," the album is available courtesy of the renowned Hydra Head Records, and was produced by Phil Ek (Built To Spill, Fleet Foxes, The Shins) in his Seattle studio.

Featuring the ferocious vocals and bass duties of Jared Warren (ex-Karp, Tight Bros From Way Back When), dominating drumming abilities of Coady Willis (also of the newly revived Murder City Devils), and for the first time, guitar madman Toshi Kasai (also a respected producer in his own right), "Mind the Drift"... The NY Times Reviews Cryptomnesia!

Critics' Choice
New CDs

EL GRUPO NUEVO DE OMAR RODRIGUEZ LOPEZ
“Cryptomnesia”
(Rodriguez Lopez Productions)

So many jumpy, frenetic, whipsawing guitar lines go zooming through Omar Rodriguez Lopez’s head that his main band, the Mars Volta, can’t hold them all. That’s why he has his own extensive catalog of solo albums and collaborations, largely (but not entirely) instrumental works like “Old Money” (Stone’s Throw), which was released earlier this year. (The next Mars Volta album is due in June.)

Decibel Talks Snack Food w/ Big Business!

huge thanks to Jeanne Fury and the entire Decibel staff for the awesome piece:

Big Business Lay the Snackdown

Behold: nachos. They were the only snack food that Beavis and Butthead ever left the couch for. And clearly, nachos have the power to mesmerize metal dudes. Just take a look at those Big Business bastards up there. Toshi Kasai, Coady Willis, and Jared Warren are half a second away from unleashing their O-faces and getting macho with that nacho.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Big Business go buck wild over a hot ‘n’ tasty mound (exhibit A after the jump), so the Deciblog decided to investigate. Though it took some significant effort (read: crowbar, motor oil, loss of dignity), we pried Warren from the love-pile and got the inside info on the snacking habits of these stoner boogie behemoths.

Stereogum Premieres Fang Island's "The Absolute Place!"

huge thanks to the entire Stereogum staff for their support!

Yeasayer's Chris Keating Remixes Fang Island

While Yeasayer is slowly progressing on their followup to All Hour Cymbals, the band's stayed in sight with one of the many standouts on the Dark Was The Night comp, and via some noteworthy extracurricular activity: guitarist Anand Wilder produced the debut EP for the BTW'd (and ACL-bound) Brooklyn project Suckers, and bassist Ira Wolf Tuton guested on Natasha Khan's stunner Two Suns. Now the band's lead vocalist and primary hands-raiser Chris Keating has a Wiki-page footnote his own, remixing "The Absolute Place" by Brooklyn outfit Fang Island. Fang Island's original is a triumphant, heavily riffed, primarily instrumental epic, whiplashing through six minutes of smiling prog jams, and as many tempos as passages, before settling into one last minute of uplifting chants. Keating's take is great, a ground-up reworking rooted in that last minute of vocals, cutting and looping them over some tropical bounce via various bits of syncopated percussion and snippets of guitars. Try 'em both back to back:
