Pyramids Ringleader Enlists All-Star Cast for New Project, Sailors With Wax Wings

Denton, TX

“...the texts herein are born of [an] encounter, in which [Stephen] Crane himself ran fluid in my walls chanting verses from the Black Riders and War Is Kind...”

Conceived in June of 2009 by R. Loren (Pyramids), after a horrific encounter with the late Stephen Crane, this took many hands to birth. After traveling the world, the result could not possibly adhere any closer to the original vision. The debut, self-titled release from Sailors With Wax Wings will feature contributions from the following group of renowned artists:

R. Loren - vocals / textures
J. Leah - vocals
Ted Parsons (Swans, Jesu, Godflesh) - drums
Simon Scott (Slowdive) - electronics
Aidan Baker (Nadja) - guitar
Colin Marston (Krallice) - guitar
Vern Rumsey (Unwound) - bass

Bloody-Disgusting Gives La Dispute / Touche Amore Split Release 4 out of 5 Stars

Album Review: Touche Amore/La Dispute 'Searching For A Pulse/The Worth Of The World' Split EP

The split clocks in at just under 9 minutes and to be quite honest it is just not enough. With it only being 2 songs from both bands it really leaves you wanting for more. 4 out of 5 stars

La Otracina Announce New Album, "Reality Has Got to Die," Out September 21st on Holy Mountain!

Download new song "Raze The Sky" here!

Someone has to carry on the prog rock torch, and La Otracina play ambitious, head-banging hard, '70s style stadium rock that hints at jazz and classical influences. - WNYC

These folks have managed to develop a voice within the genre, one which pushes beyond mere imitation into delicate, needling guitar passages, confident soloing, and heavy, non-traditional rhythmic bias. Plenty of ideological left turns enhance a rather traditional, familiar listening experience into something memorable. – Dusted

A prog-burner that's equal parts Deep Purple, Big Business and King Crimson. Grab this now. – Chronic Youth

Their ability to further the current generation of "prog" beyond mere nods to forefathers in the krautrock and psychedelic scenes is unparalleled. – Raven Sings The Blues

LA OTRACINA is the New Wave of Psychedelic Heavy Metal, a contemporary musical vision exploding with classic influences and mind-warping sonic fusions! Their sound is a dense and majestic universe where the epic glory of 70’s proto-metal and hard-rock dance with the graceful complexity of cosmic progressive rock and the hallucinogenic mystery of heavy psychedelia, and all the while free-form improvisational interludes give way to poly-rhythmic thrash assaults and spiraling jazz-rock freakouts!

Formed in Brooklyn, NY in 2003 by drummer/vocalist Adam Kriney and guitarist Joshua Anzano (now of TITAN and CHILDREN), LA OTRACINA was always hell-bent on creating highly visionary music that collided sonic ideas from the outer reaches of heavy and weird. Since that time the group has released three full length albums and 11 mini-albums, along with a slew of splits and compilations, on labels including Holy Mountain, Foxy Digitalis, and Kriney’s own Colour Sounds Recordings. As a live entity, they have embarked on seven US tours and one Italian tour, in addition to countless shows in their hometown. Their tireless work ethic and far-reaching musical abilities have earned them a devoted cult following in the underground psychedelic/heavy music world, and their live shows leave fans
screaming and fist-pumping in ecstatic awe!

Reality Has Got to Die was recorded in bass player Evan Sobel's home studio and the band's rehearsal space over two years (Sobel also recorded/produced NAAM's s/t debut LP recently released on TeePee Records). Says Kriney, "It's our first album to feature our current line-up and also the first to feature the new vocal-based music we have been working on, being that we were an instrumental band to begin with when we started. We're really excited about the musical dynamic throughout the album shifting between classic hard rock, early-metal, and prog, but also including forrays into free-jazz, cosmic synthesizer music, and even free-folk. We think this really represents the high level of musicality of the band and shows our ability to bring all of these seemingly disparate genres together in a seemless ball of connected sonic bliss. As I see it, LA OTRACINA does not play any 'type' of music, we play ALL music, and it just ends up sounding like US, no matter what style or genre we receive influence from. Lyrically, we're very excited that we can present themes to enhance the already sky-bound music to further destinations of mythological and fantastical worlds, creating poetry based on our own real experiences and our response to the insane world around us and our lives as artists struggling through it. So on many levels this album is a major work of catharsis for us and we are proud to share it with the listener in hopes that it will propel them into the future or past or whenever/wherever they'd like to be. Its a sweet ride mama, hold on."

Now in their seventh year, LA OTRACINA is the trio of Adam Kriney, Evan Sobel, and Philippe Ortanez.

* Adam - drummer/vocalist- is a well respected drummer in the global improv/experimental music underground, and his vanity label Colour Sounds Recordings is equally praised. He has also performed/toured/recorded with the likes of NEBULA, WHITE HILLS, CASTANETS, Arrington DeDionyso (of OLD TIME RELIJUN), and Steve Krakow (of PLASTIC CRIMEWAVE SOUND). Although LA OTRACINA was originally an instrumental group, Adam begin singing and drumming in 2008, leading them into newer and more magnetic terrains!

* Evan - baritone guitar (an unusual and rarely seen instrument crossing the fuzzed out sonic boundaries of bass and guitar. Used here in unique fashion laying massive riffage, ethereal textures and soaring lead lines) weaves walls of low-end brain-melt across the grids of time, holding down the grooves and extending the weirdness off into space. He is also a noted engineer/producer having recorded all of the group’s albums since he joined in 2007 and an in demand live sound engineer in the New York music scene.

* Philippe - electric guitarist- explores the dunes of avant-rock polyphony and outer dimensions of psychedelic riffage, and he’s known for super-human on-stage acrobatics as far-reaching as the cosmos. He joined the group in 2008 and ever since has helped forge their ever swirling ocean of heavy rock mayhem!

This Town Needs Guns Tours UK w/ Oceansize!

Animals, sees the Oxford-based indie kids take care of the wizardry, combining math-rock time signatures, intricate guitar / bass tapestries and a rip-roaring vocal that swoops above the virtuoso sonics like a musical trapeze artists. The tracks themselves retain a fine balance between the intellectual and emotional, the cerebral and the visceral. - Rock Sound

Opening Song 'Chinchilla' is an intricate Foals-gone-emo sigh of a rocker. 'Baboon' brings the math-rock virtuoso further to the fore, pushing it and 'Badger' atmospherically in the realm of Mogwai or Dirty Projectors. Showing they can do nice choruses when they want is 'Lemur', which is like a brainy Snow Patrol. - NME

When This Town Needs Gun hit their mark they sound stylish, sussed and like reformed mathcore men Minus The Bear covering seminal Mancunian miserablists The Smiths. Good, in other words Remember the name This Town Needs Guns. Although in fairness, it's hard to forget. - Kerrang

Oxford, UK's This Town Needs Guns has been building an ever-growing fanbase since the release of their debut album Animals in March 2009, which garnered critical acclaim from fans and press alike. Animals highlights the bands intricate balance between indie rock, catchy pop and technical prowess, all while ignoring the lure of special effects and studio wizardry. Coming off their first US & Canadian tour with label mates Native in June 2010, This Town Needs Guns returned home only to be tapped to support one of the UK's most popular exports, Oceansize, on a tour around their home country playing to some of the largest crowds to date. Following the tour they plan to stay off the road for a bit to begin the writing process for their next LP to come out sometime in 2011 via Sargent House.

Decibel Premieres New Music from Nero Order feat Eugene Robinson of Oxbow!

Free Music from Nero Order

It's nice to waltz into a summer weekend with some free wicked sick tuneage, so thanks to San Francisco's Nero Order you can download one of their epic tracks for zero money down. True DIY acolytes, the band self-financed the recording of debut album The Tower, and are also releasing it their own damn selves. Yes, a band who actually believes in their music enough that they're willing to fork over their own dough to get exactly what they want. But we wouldn't have minded investing a few bucks in this odyssean undertaking.

Iron Age Frontman Launches Cyclopean Records * New Albums Out This Year from The Roller, Mammoth Grinder, Slaughter Strike and More!

Cyclopean Records is the new Austin-based record label started by Iron Age frontman Jason Tarpey almost exactly one year ago, with releases from his own band Iron Age, their massively ripping brother band Mammoth Grinder, and Los Angeles cult-psyche heroes Green & Wood just to name a few. Says Tarpey "I started thinking about Cyclopean in the Spring of 2009, while Iron Age was in the studio recording The Sleeping Eye. We paid for the recording ourselves in order to own the album and shop it around to get a deal. Before TeePee picked it up I decided to press it on 2xLP and give Iron Age half of the records to recoup for the recording. After selling out rather quickly I decided I could probably do this full time. So I put out the Mammoth Grinder record Extinction of Humanity because it rips and they're great dudes, after that things started to happen by themselves. I caught Green & Wood live on their tour with the Roller, then I saw Slaughter Strike while Iron Age was in Canada, it was pretty much one obviously good move after another! Now that my band has settled down to write new material I have a lot of time to make the label something real and ever-present, and I'm very excited about where things are going."

As mentioned in his statement, the label has planned a slew of releases for the second part of 2010, beginning with the new 12" EP from Slaughter Strike, entitled "At Life's End," out August 3rd, followed by the new Sungod full-length "First Matter," as well as the split release from Mammoth Grinder and Hatred Surge, and new full-length releases from The Roller, NightBitch and more!

Cyclopean Records 2010 Release Schedule Part 1:

Download "Unspeakable" off Slaughter Strike's "At Life's End" here!

Slaughter Strike "At Life's End" (August 3rd)
Slaughter Strike - Coming this month, Toronto face rippers SLAUGHTER STRIKE, will unleash a brand new 5 song, 12" EP entitled At Lifes End, their 15 minute journey through a violent, death-reeking worm hole of gnashing teeth and shredding madness. Crafted by veterans of the Canadian Death/thrash/grind world, the newest offering since their debut cassette A Litany of Vileness will prove them to be even more of a filthy, priest-stomping monster that wants to devour your being through unrelenting metal. Fans of Bill Steer era Napalm Death, Repulsion, and Discharge will find 'em to be true brethren, and a limited pressing on vinyl means that it would be foolish to pass this one up. Check back soon for a release date, pre-orders will be taken for a small run of colored vinyl!

Sungod "First Matter" (August 24th)
Sungod - Cyclopean Records is proud to introduce SUNGOD, an onslaught of drifting riffs, pounding drums, and oscillations from Austin, TX. FIRST MATTER represents Sungod's first recorded excursions into the vastness of the inner space. The sonic forms move from driving 70's psychedelia to desolate western soundscapes and create a cerebral amalgam of heavy riffs, hypnotic drones, and pulsing rhythms. Captured to analog tape, the nature of the sound is organic, warm and intimate. This quality of the recording, combined with the exploratory nature of the music, make the two-piece's cosmic collection of improvisations and compositions an ideal soundtrack for the altered mind. FIRST MATTER will see a limited vinyl release with an elaborately decorated gatefold sleeve that informs and accentuates the mystical nature of the sonic rituals. Far-reaching and unrelenting, prepare for the SUNGOD and perish in his light.

+ Coming This Fall: New full-length album from Austin's doom-heroes The Roller, the highly anticipated Mammoth Grinder / Hatred Surge split 12" and the debut full-length from New England's Sabbath-obsessed warriors Nightbitch!

Included are 5 bonus tracks recorded at the legendary BBC studios in London, 4 live recordings from Clutch's 2007 Australian tour, and the digitally enhanced video for the single "Electric Worry." La Dispute + Touche Amore Ready Split Release Out July 27th on No Sleep Records!

Pre-order "Searching for a Pulse/The Worth of The World" here!

"Searching for a Pulse/The Worth of the World" is the musical and emotional convergence of two groups of close friends who, while from entirely different locations and backgrounds, share a common passion for creating honest art that seeks to explore the deeper aspects of every day existence. In particular, the songs on either side of this record discuss thematically the sometimes crippling mediocrity of day-to-day life, paying special attention to the effect environment has on self while attempting to reconcile feelings of discontent in the face of self-doubt.

Musically, the 7" represents a new approach for both bands, who, in an attempt to add aesthetic continuity to the lyrical concept, focused on finding musical middle ground with the other--a process that forced both bands into new creative territories and added a consistency uncharacteristic of most splits. The end result is a 4-song collaborative examination of life, two musical snapshots from two very different cities that each show the same lingering uncertainty present everywhere, and a challenge to the creative process. Recorded during similar time periods both in Los Angeles and in New York and featuring collaborative digital and hand-drawn artwork from La Dispute's Adam Vass and Touche Amore's Nick Steinhardt, as well as vocal collaborations between each band's vocalists, "SFAP/TWOTW" arrives via No Sleep Records this July. Included inside is a Digital Download card of all 4 songs but act fast as the entire first pressing is almost sold out!

Tracklist:
1. Touche Amore: I'll Get My Just Deserve
2. Touche Amore: I'll Deserve Just That
3. La Dispute: How I Feel
4. La Dispute: Why It Scares Me

Siskiyou (feat. members of Great Lake Swimmers) Announce Debut Album on Constellation Records

Siskiyou is the new group led by former Great Lake Swimmers member Colin Huebert in collaboration with Erik Arnesen (who still plays with the Swimmers) and joined by musician/filmmaker Karolyn Keir. The group is based in Vancouver, Canada where Huebert has recently settled after a stint working on an organic farm following his departure from the Swimmers. This is their eponymous debut album.

Colin sent us a first collection of songs in early 2010 just as the bitterest months of Montreal winter were setting in. Working like glowing embers on us all season long, gaining warmth and radiance with every listen, the humble intimacy and composure of these recordings steadily drew us into the deeper tension between economy and epiphany humming at the core of the tunes. Emotionally direct, marked by an underlying darkness and doubt about relationships (to each other, to the environment, to mortality) without overreaching lyrically or musically, and without overriding the quiet exuberance embedded in every melody - the songs compel.

It was no surprise to learn that Huebert had channeled these songs with immediacy and austerity, recording dozens of tunes at home with only voice and guitar, generally within minutes of their conception, as an exercise in unmediated documentation. From this audio sketchbook, Huebert and Arnesen began building gently ornate arrangements on top of various tunes, recording overdubs in itinerant fashion in hallways, stairwells, bathrooms and parks throughout the Vancouver area. Banjo, piano, accordion and electric guitar play the lead roles in adorning Colin's initial acoustic guitar sketches. The resulting collection of songs thrums with a scrupulous lo-fi backwoods energy and restraint. The music has been described as perfectly conjuring the lush, crisp yet often chilly landscape of the Pacific Northwest, and we tend to agree.

We are thrilled to present this first set of self-recorded, self-produced songs by Siskiyou - following the release of their debut free digital single (a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "El Condor Pasa") in June 2010. The record is available on CD and 180gLP packaged in 100% recycled paperboard jackets on September 7th in the US and September 13th in Europe. The deluxe LP version includes a limited edition silkscreen poster and a CD copy of the album. The record is also available digitally. Thanks for listening.

Decibel Premieres Exclusive Stream of New Angel Eyes Album, "Midwestern," Out This Week on The Mylene Sheath

For Your Consideration...

Chicago quintet Angel Eyes has just released their fifth record, the ferocious and swirling Midwestern. Their record label was kind enough to gift this slab of cathartic and apocalyptic post-hardcore exclusively to Decibel. Because we (read: me) is always down for free music, particularly free music that combines the ragged intensity of Buried Inside with Ennio Morricone, we figured we'd pass along the record for your enjoyment.

Hydra Head Release Melvins + ISIS Split 12" and Torche + Boris Split 10" Today!

Isis / Melvins Descriptive Text:
The long running and the longer running. The finite and the perpetual. Two of the last studio tracks from a band now in their final days, and two songs from a band who will potentially outlive us all. ISIS. The Melvins. If you enjoy music of the heavier variety and haven't heard either of these aural entities you are also probably unaware of other modern developments such as disposable contacts, the internet, and Snuggies.

As mentioned above the two ISIS songs featured on this split are amongst the last recorded output to be released by the band, and are (relatively) exclusive to this 12". The first, "Way Through Woven Branches" has previously only been available as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of their most recent full length "Wavering Radiant". The second track "Pliable Foe", has never been released anywhere, and believe or not (at the time of this writing anyway), has managed to escape being sucked into the shadowy vortex of illegal internet file sharing. Both tracks were recorded during the sessions of the aforementioned "Wavering Radiant" album and continue along the trajectory established therein - in other words, long and winding strands of melody wrapped around jagged blocks of shuddering distortion. A fitting close to a continually evolving but coherently developed cannon of recorded works, and appropriately paired with one of their early and admitted influences, that being The Melvins.

The Melvins tracks featured on the flipside of this platter are culled from their latest full length album "The Bride Screamed Murder", albeit in highly altered forms from what appears there and are exclusive to this release. Remixed and reworked by the band themselves along with the help of ever nimble and able engineer and ally Toshi Kasai, these tracks are prime examples of The Melvins persona as we've come to know it - alternately jarring, tuneful, heavy, and bizarre. While the album versions of these tracks may fall further on the side of the "heavy" and "rocking", on display as presented here is the dadaist/trickster tendencies of the band which has frustrated and delighted fans in equal measure since (very nearly) the beginning of their existence. Never content to let the listener settle into a comfortable groove, the will to disrupt and dismay may prove satisfying for some and confounding for others. In any case, if you know and love The Melvins (like we do) these songs will be another must have addition to their ever growing library of aural curios.

Side Melvins: 1. Pig House (Alt. Version) (5:53) 2. I'll Finish You Off (Alt. Version) (4:44)
Side Isis: 1. Way Through Woven Branches (6:27) 2. The Pliable Foe (7:43)

Torche/Boris "Chapter Ahead Being Fake" Split 10" Descriptive Text:

Torche and Boris... what can I say about these two outfits that everyone reading this doesn't already know... I suppose the news here is in the union, init? Torche, the burgeoning stoner/sludge/doom pop three piece hailing from Miami, and Boris, the japanese super-group known for their ability to approach and interpret any musical genre, toured North America together in the summer of 2008. During the aforementioned tour, plans to write/record a split release formed... and I hear say that the catalyst for the split stems from the idea that Torche and Boris represent, "proof of Melvins' Children," or at least that's what our good friend Tadashi of Daymare Recordings (with whom we are jointly releasing this title) tells us. "King Beef," the first new material from Torche since 2008's critically acclaimed Meanderthal, possesses the qualities of any track on Meanderthal combined with multiple tone clusters suggesting perhaps a movement towards a shoegaze sound. It is also the first song Torche has recorded as a three piece. The Boris track, "Luna," is the first new material from the band since 2008's also critically acclaimed, Smile. The unique characteristics that make up this twelve minute track might be described as noise/space rock integrating an impulsive metal-like tinge and some mighty wicked drumming that I still can't quite wrap my brain around. Ok, if you've come this far, consider yourself informed... proceed to post/tweet... its high time, I bid thee fair well.

Side Torche: King Beef (5:53)
Side Boris: Luna (12:12)

* For the upcoming Torche/Boris show in New York, Hydra Head is manufacturing a special button/pin that every ticket holder will receive. Torche Announce US Tour Dates w/ Beings, High On Fire, Boris, Baroness and More!

In 2008, hardworking Miami trio Torche’s Meanderthal topped a number of year-end lists, metal and otherwise. They were a standout at SXSW 2010, partly because the entire room was singing along (and also because of Steve Brooks’ goofy faces). Good news, for folks jonesing for more of those sugary sludge anthems: Brooks & Co. are following up Meanderthal with the playful titled Songs For Singles. These could be radio hits. They could also be songs for people in search of love. Whatever the case, per usual, they don’t waste any time: We get eight well-honed Torche anthems in just over 20 minutes. (Fans of the epic: 6-minute Closer “Out Again” will make you wet your pants.) - Stereogum

Fresh off of a massive U.S. tour with Coheed and Cambria, Torche is again touring the States! (well a portion of them at least)... Difference is, this time they are touring in pre-support of a new CD/LP Songs for Singles, which BTW is not a collection of previously released tracks... S.F.S. is a CD/LP entirely comprised of new material! And it is gonna be the best! let me tell you.

* Songs For Singles is out September 21st on Hydra Head Records

AOL's Spinner.com Streams New Miss TK & The Revenge Album, "The Ocean Likes To Party Too," Out July 13th on Ernest Jenning!

Stream "The Ocean Likes To Party Too" exclusively @ Spinner.com!

Miss TK & The Revenge had been anchored in the studio for the past few years working on The Ocean Likes To Party Too, which is coming out July 13 on Ernest Jenning Records. Featuring husband and wife Ari Katz (singer of Lifetime and Zero Zero) and Tannis Kristjanson, this dynamic duo sets the stage for its six-piece crew with first single “Beach Master,” a paint-the-town-red kind of jam with distorted electronics and Kristjanson’s prevailing vocals. - Magnet

Led by the husband and wife duo of Tannis "Miss TK" Kristjanson on vocals, and Ari Katz aka "Mighty Lion" on drums, the six member gang of Miss TK & The Revenge have been dropping scattered bits of their punk disco dance hits since their 2004 debut XOXO on the legendary NJ punk label Gern Blandsten. Formed in the wake of the short lived Zero Zero (Katz has also spent the last 20 or so years as the singer for influential NJ punks Lifetime), Miss TK & The Revenge have been deep in the studio producing new tracks for the past few years, resulting in the dynamic new LP The Ocean Likes To Party Too.

Steeped in the vibe of the group's Asbury Park beachfront digs, The Ocean Likes to Party Too is a bonfire beachparty jam from the raunchy opening grooves of "Beachmaster" to the breezy convertible bounce of "Saturday" through the tweaked out electronics of "Shimmy Sha." Beneath a sheen that hits on Blondie, M.I.A. and !!! they slow burn through endless grooves under the watchful eye of producer Alap Momin of Dälek (Momin also co-wrote two of the album's tracks).

Ernest Jenning Record Co. is kicking off a new era of TK by reissuing the (previously digital-only) impeccably produced double blast of No Biterz / Future Power on 7" single for the first time, and immediately following it up with the full out non stop bounce-groove jam of "Ocean" this Summer.

Watch the video for "No Biterz" here!

* A portion of the proceeds from sales of "The Ocean Likes To Party Too" will be donated to the Surfrider Foundation to aid in their efforts w/ the recent Gulf oil spill. Learn more about the Surfrider Foundation here.
